the V6 looses 5 or6 mpg arround town but still better than the 8. If the v8 is geared like the old fox Mustangs ofthe 90's with a big O.D. it might out do the v6 on the highway, the 5.0's sure did. they were claimed to get 28 mpg on the highway. :)

it just all depends on the load your carrying, gearing, the speed and the condition of the motor and driving style

The V8 gets about 1-2 MPG less is all. As was previosuly stated the weight of the V8 negates any additional power. If you are planning on driving it get the V6. If you plan on towing things on a semi-regualr basis Get the V8

Steve--That was the MOST MININFORMED answer I've ever seen, the V stands for the style of engine. a V engine has the cylinders in the shape of a V. Look at one and you will see how the cylinder are roughly 30 degrees slanted to a mainline up through the middle of the block. If it was an I4 it would mean "Inline" or that all cylinders go up and down. They also have Opposing 4's where 2 cylinders face exactly 180 degress the other 2 cylinders (VW and Suzuki have em)

The V8 gets about 2-4 MPG less then the 4.0 V6 The power difference is insignificant because of the weight difference. I have a 2003 Explorer 4x4 with the 4.0 V6. I elected to go with the V6 and make some slight modifications to make it perform as well as the V8. I added an Air Raid intake and a Gibson Exhaust system. I average 21 MPG in combined freeway and city driving. Off road the V6 has more than sufficient power and torque to keep the Truck going through the roughest stuff.

Size of the vehicle is the main determining factor. A V6 Mustang gets 25-28 and I've heard some getting 30 mpg's. I have a 98 GT that gets 25, I also have a 93 Crown Vic that gets 23. Just because the engine is bigger does not mean it is going to use more fuel.

Both V8 and V6 are nice vehicles. Of course the newer models are even better. However the V6 is more efficient on fuel and the V8 will burn more fuel, beacuse of weight.

The Expediton compared to the Explorer is more harder on fuel because of the weight it has.

Drive what you like and enjoy life, you only go around once. Have some fun, worry later.

yes it does,,especially for the 03 models,,they just wasn't built for gas mileage at all,but there a good truck, they just get poor mileage,,15 at the best this isn't good at all but like i said they are good trucks,,but it will make you have to stop at most as stations ,to gas up,,the v-6 on the other hand does around 20-23 ,and that's a lot of difference when it comes to mileage,,i own a repair shop, and my customers always want to know why they use so much gas,,its just the truck in general good luck hope this has helped.,,have a good x-mas.

not really theyre within a few miles of each other ,but the v8 will pull heavier load with ease. just dont get AWD model so you can switch from 2WD to 4WD. that alone saves mileage Oh and 6 cylinder models have alot of engine troubles
