Red-winged Blackbirds and Tri-colored blackbirds usually nest in wet, marshy areas (yes, in cattails like someone else said). Brewers Blackbirds will nest just about anywhere, have seen them nesting in a small bush smack in the middle of a fast food restaurants drive-thru. Brown-headed Cowbirds don't build a nest at all, they are nest parasites and lay their eggs in other birds nests.

If you are in the United States Red-winged Blackbirds, the most common kind, build their nests in cat-tails. I dont believe they line their nests with mud.
