The best way is to "live the language". If you can't actually MOVE to China, Taiwan or another country where Mandarin is spoken, try to do all your shopping in Chinese groceries, make some Chinese friends or advertise for a language exchange (you meet with a Chinese speaking person once or twice a week. One meeting, you speak all English so they can benefit from your knowledge of English, the next week, you speak all Chinese so you can benefit from their knowledge of Chinese).

PinYin is a romanization of the Chinese characters. It's good to learn this as soon as possible so that you can learn to properly pronounce Chinese words. The best way to learn to read is to practice practice practice.

www.zhongwen.com is an excellent website.

All the best - I learned Chinese and I love it!

As with any learning, "full immersion".
Attend a boarding school in China with little english contact. It'll get you going in express mode, especially if you find a chinese boyfriend.

How about you move to that Communist country. That way you will learn first hand. You will still be treated poorly and maybe learn something about life.
