The reason I don't like this co-worker is because everyday he says something negative about people of my race, even after I told him I don't appreciate it and I don't find it humorous at all. The gift is a book called the 2007 movie guide...which is a hobby he is into, but he always tries to push his views and likes and dislikes onto other people. Thats just some of the stuff I deal with, but I dont like him, but I do what I have to do in order to get my job done, cause thats what I come to work for. I really dont want to spend my hard earned money on someone I dont like.

A card is sufficient and polite.

Change his heart. Get something for him he'll really, truly enjoy, then he'll realize people of your race aren't all bad after all. Maybe he's prejudiced because he had a negative experience once with someone of your race.

BTW, there are laws governing racial harassment in the workplace. Try the gentler, kinder approach first; if that doesn't work, make a logbook of everything he says that is discriminatory, including date, time and content of statement. Include names of people who also hear it and might come forward as witnesses. Make entries at lunchtime. When you've got a couple dozen pages, go to the authorities.

A gift is something that is given of free will. I assume you have your own free will, so no, you do not need to give that lout a gift.

Your co-worker probably realizes what a jerk he is so he is attempting to compensate for that by "buying" your friendship and respect. Isn't he the little dreamer.

No you don't, you just say thank you and carry on. 'Tis the season for giving. I would not like it if someone felt obligated to give me something. Regift the gift or take it to a used books store and get the cash or trade it for something you would like. I'm confused as to why he would get you something if he's always insulting you. Perhaps he's looking for a friend?

You don't have to get them a gift. A thank you will be fine for such people.
