someone told me an interesting fact and I am curious to know if it is true.?

I was told that their is no such thing as a pure black cat. Im not sure I understand that

Well, if they meant that no cat has fur that is purely black, then they are correct. If you look at any black cat (and I've had many), they are actually many colors of brown. They typically have a very pretty coffee-color underneath the exterior layer.

I read an article several months ago on the theme of black cats. Unfortunately, I do not remember the source. It said that today there are very few purely black cats out there because back when superstitions about black cats were common, they were routinely slaughtered. After reading that article, I pay attention to the black cats that come into my clinic. It is amazing! I almost always find at least a few white hairs somewhere on even the blackest of black cats.

I know that doesn't completely answer the question. I'm not sure about the genetics of cat hair color. But it is interesting and along the same theme! :-)

I'm not sure what the person who told you this considers a "pure black cat," but as the person proudly owned by three black cats, I think I can give you an answer.

Most black cats, when seen in direct sunlight, actually appear to have very dark reddish-brown hair on some parts of their bodies. This feature becomes more prominent in cats that spend a lot of time outdoors, because the fur "sunburns" and bleaches a bit, which brings out the red. But I see it in two of my long-haired black cats who are both completely indoor cats.

Also true, most long-furred black cats have some dark-gray fur in the fur of their tummies and chests.

Something else that I've noticed is true in most black cats that I've examined closely: if you look at most of them, you'll find a few white hairs scattered in among the black somewhere on their bodies. Not enough, usually, to be noticeable from a distance. But they have a few on their undersides or chests or sometimes on their tails.

Maybe this is what your source means by "no black cats."

During the dark ages and the witch hunts,black cats were considered evil and white cats were good. So every thing bad that happened in a village was blamed on witches. To rid themselves of evil, witches and black cats were exterminated. They did a very good job of this, So today there are few if any pure black cats. If you look closely at a black cat you will fined some white on it some were, even if it is just a few hairs.

Not sure if it's true or not. My cat appears to be black and at first glance anyone would say he was "pure black" but when he lays in the sunlight he has a lot of brown on him. Also, if I pet his fur backward his undercoat is gray, so he's definitely not a pure black.

They are wrong. There is a purebred cat called the Bombay. They are pure black. If you look closely though, even cats that appear pure black have a few white hairs.

As Far as the hair color i have a black cat. PURE, I m not sure.as i dont know how to test for purity in color. Of course one
could use logic and say the same for all other colors except white which is void of color. or just may be that there are no pure whites.

My black cat is almost pure black but he does have stray white and dark brown hairs throughout but only like one or two in the same area.

I guess to a point it is a difference of opinion that their is truly a pure black cat to my belief there is black cats with pure black fur I had one I know
