During the Viet Nam War, I tried and tried to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, because of their reputation and that snazzy dress blue uniform to attract girls.

But, because of problems as a teenager, I couldn't join any service.

So, I volunteered to be drafted, which automatically put me in the United States Army.

In hindsight, I think the Army was definitely best, especially during the Viet Nam War.

Marines generally went only to Viet Nam or Okinawa.

Soldiers went all over the entire world.

I served in Germany, Viet Nam, and Korea, and visited Israel, Japan, Australia, and Thailand.

Marines were usually stuck in one job, but as a soldier, I was trained in four (04) different skills (electronics repair, multiple channel communications, military police patrol, and cavalry scout).

Also, I was able to complete several college courses while serving in the United States Army.

Marines are EXPECTED to be heroes, so it's difficult and rare for Marines to get decorated.

I was just an ordinary soldier, and never did anything heroic, but I was still awarded decorations I never truly deserved, and rightly or wrongly, it was more than a Marine usually got.

Yes, I wanted to be a Marine.

But, my service in the United States Army worked out well, so I have no regrets.

Did you know that Audie Murphy, the most decorated American hero in the Second World War, was in the Army because the Marines rejected him?

It depends on the situation and the strategic/tactical needs. No doubt about it, Marines are superior at coastal warfare and maritime operations. The Army however is much better at sustained inland operations and has a better support structure for such operations--just as the Marines have a better support structure for their roles.

Marines excell in basic infantry combat tactics. However, when you get into heliborne ops, airborne ops, and deep reconnaissance and raids and specialized warfare--like trench warfare, Army forces train in those areas more. Ship boarding, amphibious assaults, coastal reconnaissance are Marine specialties.

If you're trying to figure out who's better, you need to have a context for it. If you're just trying to figure out who's tougher you'll get all kinds of opinions. Marine basic is longer and they emphasize rifle marksmanship more than Army basic (personally, I have no problem hitting targets out at 600 meters with standard peep sights either and I didn't need the extra weeks of training). However, there are far fewer Marines than there are Army soldiers and thus less occupations in the Marines. Now, Marines have Force Recon for special ops, but the Army has Rangers and Special Forces...and it wouldn't be right not to mention the highspeed LRSD and Pathfinders.

For the hell of it, I wouldn't be a proper Army vet if I didn't say that a bunch of us from my unit (101st ABN at the time) got into it with a bunch of Jarheads during an op out at Camp Lejeune once (Ocean Venture back in mid 90's)...and they came out on the poor end of the deal. And I say Jarhead with the utmost respect and fondness. I'd rather have a Marine on my side than not.

Airforce is better, they treat their people better. But if you are makign a comparison between army and marines, then the Army is better. The Marines will suck your brains out and indoctrinate you, mind control you like your in some religious cult and then suck them back into your skull besides all the physical stuff you have to deal with in their boot camp. The marines are the first to see the enemies face, the first to be sent out and they get the worst barreks (living tents).

No disrepect intended to the U.S. Army, I think it would be an honour to serve in the Ranger, or Special Forces, or Airborne regiments. Having never served in any, I cannot say anything from personal experience --but I am familiar with the history of the Marine Corps, and I have to say I would be proud to be one of the few.

well i'm in the air force, which it think is tops, but the Marine Corps is amazing. I would definetelly say Marines. Their boot camp is longer, and they train harder. Nothing against the army, but I just love the marines.

100% sure about this ............. Marines. Because in the Corps you will be together with men and women who been trained just as hard as you. That means that you will be sure that you can count with the marine just next to you in the line. If you will be involve in real combat action, Im sure that you want to be with a marine just next to you.

Marines are the first in and the last out. The only thing the army has close to it is like Rangers.

Ok, being in the Navy gave me a little insight. I have lived near an Army fort all my life and I've worked with marines. Marines are tougher. I told my husband that if our town was overrun with terrorists, I'd prefer to have the marines take care of it. I love the marines. Oorah!

IMO, marine corps is tougher -to get into and to be in. I think basic training is longer and I know it ends with something called "The Gauntlet" which is like a 2-day war game in the woods. Case in point, the army has about a million people in it, while the Corps has probably half that.

I was in the U.S. Army, so I'd have to say the Army. I have friends in all the services though. All the military branches should be respected!
