what is the best martial arts self defense for an average person? I am 5'10 185 and catch on very fast. One of my friends says that Jui-jitsu can not be defeated and that is the best and nothing is close to it.

Brad,
There is no best art, only best artists.
My best advice for you is to find a good school in your are instead of finding a good style.
The quality and frequency of your training will far outweigh the style you train in.

Tips for a good school:
Never pay for rank testing
Never sign a contract
Find a clean friendly school
Take a test class before deciding

Your size and strength level would help you more in the grappling arts. Just based on those factors. So, Judo or Brazillian Jiujitsu would be your thing. Judo would be good for you because a certain amount of strength definetly comes in handy (especially at the beginner level). You put your strenght to use by using the different throws Judo has. Your weight will come in handy with Judo groundwork where you can use it to pin people. Brazillian Jiujitsu would probably be the 2nd recommendation. It doesn't have the spectacular throws that Judo does (so your strenght wouldn't be used as much). It also was designed more with smaller people in mind (since the founder Helio Gracie was a very small man). That doesn't mean big people can't do it, it just means it's an agile, speed, technique oriented martial art which is best for smaller guys. But, it still is grappling so your attributes still can be used well. The striking arts like boxing, kickboxing, or Karate could work for you too. You said you no sport experience and are a big guy so, striking arts may not be as much for you as grappling. The striking sports are good for smaller guys too. They use traits like speed, agility, technique, things the small guys are naturally good at. So, you may find yourself at the mercy of a guy who is smaller and can move around well. That's what I'm thinking from what you described. You could probably be a strong, powerful slugger, but, those guys tend to get outboxed too. It might be hard for you to do kicking too with such size. So, I think JUDO is best for you. I think you will do well with it. So, try it out. Just be careful with people. Sometimes people come into Judo and treat it like a streetfight or a chance to show off their strength and power. If you do that, people won't like you. So, be real careful when you throw people, go slow and easy. Good luck!

As far as being defensive Martial Arts, Aikido or Judo are both pretty effective. Be careful with Aikido though, it is one of the harshest Martial Arts, focusing on incapacitating your opponents often by breaking the punching arm. Judo is based mostly on throws be grabbing your opponent, useful if your opponent has a shirt on, but not as good when that shirt rips or your opponent is bare-chested.

Any martial arts is fine. I take mixed martial arts which is a combination of stand-up and ground fighting. You could take karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Ju-jitsu...there are so many disciplines. Your best bet is to read up on each one and decide which best suits your interest.

Tkwando - Has mostly devastating kicks to the head and to the legs. A bit difficult to master but you only need to specialise a few in a real fight. Hands are of little use except blocks and using yr elbows.
Kung Fu - Flashy stuffs that u don't really need in a real fight. Attacks are not as powerful as karate or tkwando but they are FAST. Lightning fast. More difficult to master and requires a lot of stretching.
Muay Thai - Now we're talking. This art trains you to receive a lot of punishment. And also DELIVER extreme punishment. Proper usage of knees and elbows are crucial in close combat. A knee attack to a person's chest = swingging a sledge hammer to his chest. (i'm not lying. Measured in Discovery channel) Not as fancy as tkwando or kung fuu but Muay Thai fighters are the most feared fighters in the realm of martial arts....and also in street fights.
I'm not being bias or anything...but i've trained in tkwando for a few years.

it doesn't matter what style it matters about how much u know and how good u r at that style any style can beat another it just depends on how good the fighter is... like driving a car if u have a porche and race a honda but the guy in theporche never has drove before the guy in the hondas going 2 win.

There is no best marial arts but you should choose a style that accomodates you. Like i like butokukan karate but if you are soft hearted or a complainer or don't like workout then I would not suggest my dojo. if you misbehave the least of a punishment is 20 pushups. so choose one that accomodates you.
