Viral gastroenteritis is highly contagious.
The viruses are often transmitted on unwashed hands.
People can get the viruses through close contact with infected individuals, such as sharing their food, drink, or eating utensils, or by eating food or drinking beverages that are contaminated with the virus.
People who no longer have symptoms may still be contagious, since the virus can be found in the stool for up to 2 weeks after they recover from their illness. Also, people can become infected without having symptoms, and they can still spread the infection.
Outbreaks of viral gastroenteritis can occur in child care settings, schools, nursing homes, cruise ships, camps, dormitories, restaurants, and other places where people gather in groups. If you suspect that you were exposed to a virus in one of these settings, you may want to contact your local health department, which tracks outbreaks.
Prevention
Prevention is the only way to avoid viral gastroenteritis. There is no vaccine available. You can avoid it by
* washing your hands thoroughly after using the bathroom or changing diapers
* washing your hands thoroughly before eating
* disinfecting contaminated surfaces
* not eating or drinking foods or liquids that might be contaminated

mostly through contact and breathing in the virus. Winter is a most contagious time because we are all stuck inside buildings with each other and the air is constantly recycles in which you are breathing in peoples sneezes and coughs like crazy. always wash your hands, and take extra precaution and take vitamins. Drink green tea. The stronger your immune system, the lesser the cold.

These are symptoms of something. You dont pass on symptoms, you pass on virus' or illness'. Its not the vomit and diarrhoea that is being passed on.

If your talking about the flu, then it is passed most commonly through hand contact, but also through coughing. That's why there is all this talk of hand washing and covering your mouth when you cough with a kleenex or something to catch the viruses from spreading from one person to the next.

It's very complicated, and we're not certain. Most people believe it's either sneezing/coughing small water droplets into the air that are then inhaled, or by touching a contaminated surface.

its called the 'fecal/oral transmission. poor bathroom hygeine leads to fecal matter, which is a vehicle for bacteria & viruses, to be transferred to someone or something that someone will unwittingly touch & infect himself. so many people dont wash their hands after using the toilet & i dont know why, it only takes a few minutes to wash your hands & prevent a lot of sickness from being spread around
