OK I keep hearing about how the new religion of "Secular Humanism" is trying to take over and wash away everything good and decent in the world (yes I am exaggerating)

Anyway what I am curious about is WHY do people call it a religion?

Definition of secular is as follows:
"1. of or pertaining to worldly things or to things that are not regarded as religious, spiritual, or sacred; temporal: secular interests.
2. not pertaining to or connected with religion (opposed to sacred): secular music.
3. (of education, a school, etc.) concerned with nonreligious subjects.
4. (of members of the clergy) not belonging to a religious order; not bound by monastic vows (opposed to regular)."

Is it a lack of knowledge about the English language that is the cause of this inappropiate name?

WHY would people term a new philosophy that is about not letting religion control society a new religion?

Samurai Jack:: I don't find it offensive I just find the horrible misuse of the English language a little disconcerting and disheartening

Gods child:: What do you not understand the question? I thought it was quite simple..you didn't even come close to an answer that was within a light-years of the question's topic.

I think because they're threatened by it. I've been to a secular humanist meeting. It was a group that encompased 4 counties. In the area that was covered, there were well over 300 churches to this one group of secular humanists. They had about 12 people at this meeting of the humanists. So very threatening! :)

Here's their website :) http://www.secularhumanism.org/

Personally I just think it is a more religious sounding way to say atheist. I am one, and I personally don't use the term.

I also agree that atheism isn't a religion. It is the disbelief in religion so it pertains to religion. But it isn't one by itself.

I think it's just for convenience sake. It helps to continue the conversation, and that's probably a good thing. Don't be offended by it.
