my best choice is to see if he wants to go to any dance then ask his friend who he is planning on asking (if he is going ) and if he is and then you should write him a note like...
" hey are you going to the dance? if so you want to come with me?" there are multiple ways of asking him....just choose a good one! :)

"hey you know the school dance is coming up right so do you want to go with me."

if he's your boyfriend he should WANT to take you. Let him kno theres a dance coming up and you think you guys should go. Make it a "we" thing. Not "I want you to go to this dance..."
