I am thinking of getting a couple of Quaker Parakeets, and I was wondering how long do they live for and are they prone to any health problems?

No health problems and they can live over 25 yrs if taken care of properly. But you better start out with only 1 because they can make noise and bite pretty hard if you dont get one who is hand tamed and waiting to bond with someone. Quaker bites can hurt very badly and break the skin and make you bleed. They are very intolerate of strangers and will be very loud and shake their heads in fear waiting to bite you or the stranger if you dont watch or know what you are doing with them. They are a one person bird and dont like strangers around at all. It will be easier for you if you got 1 hand tamed for about 6 months before bringing in another one, and when you bring in another one it has got to be hand tamed. If it isnt it will make the other one be wild too and you could have a real problem on your hands if you dont know what it is you are doing with this breed of birds. I have had them for years and learned the hard way. But now the 2 i have get along great love each other and me. If you get 2 that are wild then if you dont like noise you wont have them long because wild quakers are much noisier then the tamed ones are, and they can cause more problems then the tamed ones if you dont know what your doing with them. GOOD LUCK!

I have a three year old quaker parakeet. Just make sure it's legal to have where you live. In USA some states have banned them as pets. They can live up to 40 years with proper care and there aren't many health problems with them. I've heard they are prone to plucking feathers but mine is just fine. I would buy them a year apart so you can bond with one before the next one comes along if you want a pet quality bird. Just know that they bite really hard and clamp down on you. Mine did this for the first 8 months I had him after the "honeymoon month" which is roughly the first month you get a bird where it's getting use to you. Quakers are smart and will test you to the extreme. You must not show any reaction to them biting you or they'll continue to do it to get attention.
Good luck quakers are fantastic pets! Mine says about 70 things and talked human at 2 months old. Some will never talk.

To the person who said quakers aren't parakeets - YES THEY ARE! They're not budgies aka parakeets but they are a member of the parakeet family just like the princess of whales parakeet etc. Parakeets are members of the parrot or hookbill family.

Quakers can live to be 25 to 30 years of age and perhaps even longer. Quaker Parakeets can be prone to Fatty Liver Disease - so you should ensure he does not become overweight by keeping him off all-seed diets and other high fat foods.
Feather plucking is another problem that is sometimes seen in Quakers. There can be both physical and behavioral causes for this disorder, so an examination by an avian vet is strongly recommended

Quaker parakeets can live up to 25 years with proper care. They are prone to fatty liver diease if given their liberty with certain foods, including sunflower seeds. Also, if you get a "pair" of quakers they are more likely to bond with each other than with you, so unless you do not want to interact with them as pets, you should probably get only 1.

the two a variety of cages are relatively small for a Quaker parakeet. i does not even placed a budgie in a variety of. you like a minimum of a 24"x18"x18". those are very energetic birds and that they want various room. If it is going to spend lots of time interior the cage - it desires an outstanding larger one. purchase the main important cage you have adequate money. look into fowl exhibits to discover decrease priced cages, or perhaps craigslist. My Quaker has approximately twelve toys in his cage - yet he has a huge cage, too. they want circled each and every few weeks so the fowl does not lose interest. Quakers like to weave and braid, so rope toys and chain toys are great possibilities, besides as issues to wreck like timber. The cage should not be so crowded that the fowl won't be able to stand on a perch and flap his wings freely without hitting something. If the cage won't be able to hold a minimum of 5, that's no longer great adequate. From a puppy save, green quakers value extra or less $3 hundred-4 hundred. From a breeder, approximately $one hundred fifty. they're unlawful in many states however, so verify yours is criminal. Even then, many have regulations or require helps because of the fact they're an invasive species. Quakers stay extra or less 30-40 years, so which you're in for the long haul. they are able to be somewhat loud, unfavourable, and territorial. yet for the main suitable proprietor, they're various exciting.

Sources say with great care they can live 25-30 years. They are prone to fatty liver disease.Personally, I found it easier to train parrots separately because they tend to bond with each other than with me. They can be very noisy, but with work can be wonderful pets. Have a tweet holiday.
