It's an input for digital audio. When you have a digital source, rather than having that source convert it to analog to send to your receiver, in order to minimize distortion and signal degradation, the optical port can keep the audio in digital format. Most get this from DVD players to utilize Dolby Digital surround sound or DTS, but other sources could be a digital cable box, a satellite TV receiver, a satellite radio receiver or an HDTV. If you have any of these devices, you should hook them up using the optical cable (or digital coaxial) for the best quality sound.

its a digital audio port if you have a dvd or cable box or anything that has that connection hook it up to ur reciver to hear digital audio like you would at the movie theaters
