So I brought my dog with me to the pet store. I was standing in line behind a family purchasing a Rot puppy. The parents left their two children (neither child could have been more then 4 years old) in charge of this puppy while they worked out the paperwork. This family did not speak English very well and the whole process was taking an extremely long time. As my dog and I stood waiting this Rot puppy was running all over the place, and kept coming back to jump on my dog. Neither the store employee nor the family did anything to control this puppy and his newly found freedom he was enjoying so much (no leash or anything). After about 5 attacks on my dog's tail he turned around and snapped at the puppy. He didn't hurt it, but clearly let the youngster know that he had had enough. Well, that got the attention of the clerk who proceeded to kick me out because my dog was too aggressive to be in their store!
I don't think that was right...do you?

I don't plan on ever going in there again. I was far from home in unfamiliar territory...and I'm not even sure I could find the place again even if I wanted to. I never complained, I just left and bought my treats at the Wal-Mart across the street.

Of course you shouldn't have been kicked out...the clerk had to make the choice between telling the people spending mega$$$ on his pet store puppy to control their new dog, or booting the person innocently buying a $3 bag of cookies.
The family's lack of control sure bodes well for that Rottie puppy's future, huh?
*sigh*

Oh my god!! St. Lady, I do that too!!
I tend to tell prospective buyers all the things that are wrong with the dogs - like it has an eye infection, it has diarrhoea and a really big bloated stomach that doesn't look normal even for a puppy or that it has this problem and that it probably came from a puppy mill and was way overpriced and why don't you try contacting a registered breeder for a purebred dog with papers that has been tested and is considered to be sound?? :P
Obviously the check out chick was totally unaware of what is considered to be natural dog behaviour. That's completely shocking and what an idiot!! What business does she have working there anyway!
I hate it how pet store assistants often get high and mighty and think they're know it alls just because they work in a pet store.
I've seen sick pups in windows and gone in to alert them about the pup's very obvious eye infection or whatever - or how filthy the cages are and how unhealthy it is... they just look at you and shrug and give you a so what's it to me kind of stare.
People who work in pet stores are just adding to the problem true??
I like to buy my pet treats, food and toys from massive warehouses where they only have pet adoption days - they do this in partnership with local rescues and as such there are no permanent pets on display.
If I were you, I would have been trying to explain to the family who didn't speak english ... very slowly.... what a bad idea that puppy was. *sigh* But then again... i'm a busy body and I can't keep my mouth shut or my opinions to myself!

Of course it wasn't right. And I think that Loki was right...they are just in it for the money...Expensive dog vs. dog treats. Lose one customer or the other?? Of course they would pick the one buying an expensive dog. If it was just a local pet store, not a chain, I would just let it go. However if it was a chain like Pet Go, Pet Goods, etc., I would certainly write to the store itself and their headquarters stating what happened. They never should have let that puppy run free throughout the store. They should have had him on a leash, crated or held in the back until the paperwork was taken care of.

You should send the store clerk an anonymous letter suggesting they watch "Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic Chanel.
Seriously, your dog did what is perfectly natural and normal for a dog to do. The adult dog corrects the younger or poorly behaving dog by snapping or even nipping. It's not meant to harm, just get their attention.
The store clerk and the family in question are totally lacking in understanding. People like that should be required to take a class on dog behaviour before they're allowed to purchase a pet. Better yet, they shouldn't sell animals in the pet shops anyway.

Any pet store that sells a puppy should have sense enough to have the puppy restrained in some way (either a leash or a carrier) before they give it to the buyer, just as they require you to have your dog on a leash when you come in to buy treats. I know it probably wasn't worth it to you to make a fuss about it, but I do agree with you, it wasn't right. What your dog did was typical dog behavior. When a puppy is rambunctious around an adult dog, the adult will put the puppy in their place, just like a parent would reprimand their child for acting up. So yes, I definitely understand your frustration.

Please contact the store manager over this . This could happen again and the store could be sued . Please explain to the store manager what happened ,that store clerk was at fault and so were the people that were buying the dog . Do you live in fla ?by the way . Just asking because it seems as though i have had to learn spanish in order to speak to store clerks in fla. Not being racist it is a fact that fla has a major hispanic population . I thought maybe if you speaked spanish you could have explained the sittuation to the people about the dog they were buying . Sorry for the book but you need to let the store manager know of the incident. good luck and god bless and happy holidays.

Petsmart is not much better. A few years ago an employee there whacked my dog in the face/eye hard with a pole type thing, and my dog barked and dropped to the floor. I watched the ENTIRE thing, but the employee tried to claim my dog bit her, went and told her manager, and then kicked me out of the store, even though there was no bite mark (how can a dog bite someone when he is busy cowering on the floor because he got stabbed in the face?) I was so upset because she hit my dog in the face on purpose. I watched her look at him and then proceed to walk directly into him. It was horrible, and it all happened so fast!
I suggest you complain. The dog should've been on a leash. Since your dog was on a leash, you were safe even if you dog did bite the puppy.
good luck

That really stinks! They should have had the puppy in a holding kennel until papers were signed and $$$ was paid.
I somewhat feel sorry for that Rot puppy - If they were ignoring it in the store, you can only assume that they won't be properly caring for it and training it once they get it home. Also, the mere fact that they were buying a puppy from a Pet Store like that tells me they have no idea what they're doing and probably should have done more research before even getting a dog!

No, that doesn't seem fair. It sounds like they were letting the puppy get away with some bad behavior, thinking it was cute, or something. Those pet stores that allow dogs in should be prepared for the worst. Sometimes when you go into a PetSmart or one of those big stores on a weekend, the place is full of excited dogs.

No. I don't think you should have gotten kicked out. The family who was buying the Rottie should have been responsible because they were not keeping there dog under control. Who kicked you out? A manager? Or just a clerk? Well I guess the best thing you could do now is to just let it go. It wasn't right but there is no use in staying upset over something you cannot change.
Take care.
