Graphics Interchange Format: a digital image file format first created by CompuServe, and used alongside JPEG as one of the two standard graphics formats on the world-wide web. The GIF file format is "non-lossy", meaning that no image detail is sacrificed in the encoding/decoding of images. This said, GIF images can only contain a maximum of 256 colours, and are therefore inferior to JPEG files when photo-realistic images need to be included on a web page. GIF images are hence most commonly used for simple graphics and logos on a web site that are required to load quickly and include a minimal number of colours. The "animated GIF" graphics file format is also now commonly used on the web where small but rapid-loading animated images are required.

It's an image format. Image formats include GIF, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, and PNG.
GIF is very popular, but unless you want to make animated GIFs, PNG (more specifically PNG-8) is better than a GIF. PNG-8 has more features than a GIF and can store the same data as a smaller file size.

in simple speak its a picture with the file extension 'gif' (file ends with .gif). Different picture types have different properties - for example if you want to make a picture with a transparent background it has to be a gif file. Animated pictures are also gifs.

A GIF is a picture formatt. Most camera's you use film in takes a gif picture unless you have a Didgital camera which takes a Jpeg picture formatt that works good with the computer an a GIF is a much larger file and doesn't work real good with a computer. Good luck. Mikie.

Pronounced jiff or giff (hard g) stands for graphics interchange format, a bit-mapped graphics file format used by the World Wide Web, CompuServe and many BBSs. GIF supports color and various resolutions. It also includes data compression, but because it is limited to 256 colors, it is more effective for scanned images such as illustrations rather than color photos.

Really general questions, as above, PLEASE, people, go to wikipedia instead. It's a waste of everyone's time to paste a link to the wiki describing exactly what you're asking about.
a .gif is a picture format.
