My son is turning 3 next week and his talking isn't great. Especially compared to other kids his age. I would say that he knows about 50 words and he only uses them if we tell him to. He doesn't say things like mom give me juice. So is there anything that I can do to help him along?

Are you enabling him not to talk?? You know, by understanding his cues and gestures of what it is he wants and giving it to him without him actually having to ask for it. That sometimes is the issue. But the other things that you need to see his doctor about are a hearing test (if you can't hear well you don't speak well). Also, sometimes autism, even mild autism such as Asperger's syndrome, will present this way. Is he social with you and other kids, or is he very self-occupied? Not to scare you in any way, just something you may want to have checked out. There can be many reasons a child is not speaking well at this age.

Is your son bilingual?? There are lots of boys who start speaking at 3 -3 and a half years..so i think it's normal. I have heard many people telling that boys are usually slower than girls. My son is 2 and half years old and his vocabulary is around 10 words only. If you are in the U.S , there are state sponsored speech therapy programmes available. There is a great website called www.starfall.com that also helps the kids a lot. There is no need to worry..most of the times kids knows much more than what we think that they know. Don't be surprised if you son comes up one fine morning and starts speaking full sentences. All the best.

Find out what speech therapy services are available in your area...
Where I live there are preschool programs that screen 3 and 4 year olds for issues and start and IEP that starts services needed.
Better to address it now rather then first grade, causing them to fall behind instantly.
My 2 year old is now receiving these services. A doctor can help make referrals.

All kids do things at their own pace. Just keep talking to him and asking him questions. Try to get him to tell you about his day, or find something he is really interested in and talk to him about it. My son didn't really start to talk until he was almost three and now he never shuts up. Just be patient and don't worry too much. You may want to have his ears checked to see if he has a hearing problem.

Every child is different. Some do things faster than others. Since you are concerned you should talk to you pediatrician. My son was born with his tongue tied and it prevented him from being able to talk well. No one caught it until he was two. After they fixed it he went to speech therapy and he is right on schedule with his school work and such. I would take him and have him checked out.
Good luck!

He may have a hearing problem. When I was younger my brother had the same problem. They wouldn't put tubes in his ears so when he got older he talked with a speech problem. A couple of years later I had a cousin that was born. He got tubes put into his ears and now he talks very well. You might want to check that out with your doctor. Or maybe he is just shy.

Hello. I work with the Preschool age, I've known lots of children that don't fully talk till 3.5 years or 4 yrs. I suggust you read to him every night, keep him around children his own age and talk to him( no baby talk). Ask him questions!
Well I hope all works out. Just give him time. He will talk when he is ready.

Check your local social and rehabilitation services, they should offer testing and help for developmental concerns.

Sounds like a pretty smart fellow to me.

After all, even a fish wouldn't get into trouble if it kept its mouth shut.
