Hello
In a short and easy explanation, When you are running your heart has to pump faster, which in turn increases your blood flow. It keeps your heart pumping healthly aswel as pumping more oxygen around your body and to all the vital organs. When your fit and healthy you feel great and if your not, you generally feel tierd all the time. And lack any energy.

It causes stress to your body.
The muscles are actually damaged by the exertion, but tend to overcompensate in repairing the damage. Regular running therefore builds and tones muscle.
Likewise the body compensates for the stress to your cardiovascular and respiritory systems in a way it wouldn't if you were to live a sedentary lifestyle.
Regular running is health-improving. Irregular running is just tiring.

Running is a great way to stay fit! It speeds up your heart rate, gives you energy, builds up your immune system, builds strong bones, makes you strong, and as your stated great for cardiovascular health! Running is better than walking, only in the sense that it gets your heart rate up faster than walking does. Usually it doesn't take too long before your heart rate goes up when your'e running, but when walking it might take a little whille. (walking is still great for you, too)
