Best bet...
Fly into Mexico...walk north...cross border...there are plenty of bleeding heart liberals who will be more than happy to welcome you with open arms....
Just Kidding!!
I think that your first move would be to contact the American Embassy. If you do a google search there should be information there to help you.

If you marry an American citizen you can get American visa in about six months but there is a catch you have to stay married to her for at least 2 years or you lose the citizenship.

@ cptcanuck, keep applying at the US Embassy. You’ll eventually be able to immigrate to the US. I know it took a Briton 3 years to be able to legally become a permanent resident and a Colombian man 10 years to become a legal resident and later on a US citizen. There are a foreigners I went to Marine Corps bootcamp with in MCRD San Diego apart from the Mexican recruits from California and Texas, there some Polish I came on the bus with as well as some Filipinos, Germans, and a Portuguese before we stepped on the "yellow footprints" in MCRD San Diego. But they immigrated here with their parents who are the ones that started the immigration process. However, I know some Canadians (or half Canadians/half Americans) that are serving in the Marine Corps and Navy. Good luck.

As well as uscis.gov you should also look at the US embassy's London website. It has lots of helpful information. If you do have an American girlfriend, it is relatively easy to get into the USA. It is much harder to get here on a work visa.
If you go down the marriage route please make sure you do two things:
1. Make sure it is a genuine relationship. You will get an interview with Immigration about 9 months after arrival. They can kick you out then if it is not genuine.
2. Hire an immigration attorney. It is worth every penny.

If you’re here legally, check with Immigration.

I think you have to pay a certain fee and have to wait 5 years to be able to apply for citizenship. Also, I read somewhere that during those 5 years, you can only leave the US twice a year or just twice during the 5 years (I’m not sure). If you do leave more times, you might not be allowed back into the US for awhile. Ask Immigration about it. Good luck.

Maybe I can trade you for British citizenship? Sorry, I don't have any real knowledge about this. I once tried to research Britain's immigration policies online and could not make heads or tails of them.
Here is an official website that has tons of information. I hope you find what you are looking for:

I'm Canadian. I asked the U.S. consulate how to get a Green Card so I could join the U.S. Army, and they did not answer me so I gave up thinking this craap is only worth the trouble if you are in Mexico making $5/day.
I'm indistinguishable from the average American, so even xenophobia doesn't explain why I can't freely go there.
