Dogs tend to trace their pack status back to the order in which they were born. This is what establishes their order in the pack. Though they cannot count per se, they still instinctively know in what place they are within the pecking order. In order to best establish a dominance, you should roll the dog onto his back and gently rub his neck and belly, this allows him to understand that even in this position, (Note: The alpha male is always shown the neck and belly by subordinate males to reveal it's weakness and show it is no threat.) he is in no danger. Holding down the head may work to some extent, but in some cases the head down is the precursors to a fight. Dominance and pack order are usually only necessary where there are other dogs and the question is in doubt. Though he will never see you as another dog, he will know his place within the pack, especially since you are the one who provides the food, another job for the dominante male or female. Though he will have his little acts of defiance, he will always do just as much as a dog in his position is allowed to do.

You are absolutely doing the right thing! At 5 months he is still a child and is going to act like one. When you tell a human child to go to bed what do you think he will do ? CRY . Why ? to evoke sympathy. Dogs do the same thing. It will take some getting use to but just ignore the behavior and do what you need to do . He will eventually get use to it and mature to the point he will not fight it.
And by the way, Ceasar Milan is amazing and his method works that is why he is so popular. He has never hurt a dog so I don't know why people think he is so cruel . Watch some of his shows and you'll see for yourself.

I don't know where you got these ridiculous ideas, but stop right now!!
This is a 5 month old puppy and you're playing Cesar Milan games on him that are only necessary for dogs whose temperaments are so bad they should be put down!
The only thing you're teaching this poor little guy is that you can't be trusted. Of course he's not going to let you clean his eyes - it's uncomfortable and he does not trust you.
Ease up or you are going to have a majorly neurotic dog on your hands. Show a little common sense and a lot of patience. Hopefully, you'll get in touch with his breeders to give you tips on dog care. And be sure you get help from competent trainers before you try training him.

Some dogs don't like to be held...especially puppies. But you need to clean his eyes. So you hold his snout, all the while telling him he's a good dog. Clean his eyes quickly, then give him a treat when its finished. Its all about routine. But yes...you NEED to establish who is boss - all dogs need that. And one way to make sure that happens is to NEVER sit on the floor with your dog. You are above him at all times.

Yes ,it time for you to take control and become the alpha mommy. This is the way that their mother corrects them and put them into sumission. She takes their muzzle in her mouth ,while applying pressure. She always knows the amount of pressure to apply.
You can do this with your hand. Cup your open hand around the muzzle apply a slight pressure ,at the same time saying No in a not too stern of a voice tone. It works wonders. Be patient for
it probably will take several sessions.

Why do you hold his head down while he is crying? Don't hold his head for any disipline. You can also do damage his eyes by holding his head!
At 5 months you can get him into a puppy class so YOU can learn how to handle him.
Also have the vet or a groomer show you how to clean his eyes.

what is he crying about? it could be that he needs something you are not providing. is he hungry, does he need to go out? you need to learn to read your dog. if he's just crying for attention, holding his head down isn't really the answer. that is actually a very aggressive move that mama dogs wouldn't do unless the action really warranted it. if he's just whining for your attention, ignoring actually works - but you'll need to be patient...it takes a little while.

You do need to establish that you are the leader of your pack. Does he let you let your roll him on his back and gently hold him there? I established my leadership with my dog by doing this if he struggled I did not let him up until he stopped.(Some of these answers are from idiots who do not understand how a dog thinks. ) Try gently "playing" with his eyes when you do not need to clean them. Praise and reward him when he allows you to touch his eyes. Also do this with his feet and teeth-it makes nail clipping and tooth brushing so much easier!
Good Luck!!

1. You are not the alpha dog, you are the human.
2. Do not restrain the dog.
3. Get some professional guidance before you totally screw up the dog you love so much.
