Yes, Everclear is 190 Proof, which is 95% alcohol. The Absente Absinth I have is only 110 proof, so 55% alcohol.

Some of the posters above are getting proof and Alcohol % mixed up. Proof is twice the Alcohol %. So 90 proof is only 45% alcohol.

Everclear was outlawed in my state 15 years back due to a couple of people who decided to have a shot contest. One had 22 shots and died, and the other had 21, ended up in a coma for a week, when he came out of it, he lost sight in one eye and had severe liver damage.

The other incident was a college student who drank 15 shots and died. Killer stuff!

80 Alcohol Drinks

80 proof, or 80%???? I think there is quite a confusion here!!

The alcoholic content in a beverage is determined relative to its proof, which is twice the alcohol content. For example, a glass of 24 proof wine would be 12 percent alcohol. A drink that is 40 percent alcohol would be 80 proof. There are three main categories of alcoholic drinks: beer, wine, and distilled spirits (hard liquor).

Absinth is in fact 70 or 80 PROOF. The level is not very defined, because it depends on how, where and by whom it is distilled.

Of course, pharmacy quality, pure alcohol is 100%... but why would one want to drink THAT???

What makes you *blind* is not the amount of ethanol (that by itself makes you drunk and sick), but rather methanol - a dangerous type of alcohol not found in normal drinks but sometimes used to make cheap stuff...

Yes, Absolute Red Label is100%, Bicardi 151 is %151 and "moon shine" / grain is between 160% and 199%. 200% is pure alcohol and can make you blind.

In the United States, the proof number is twice the percentage of the alcohol content measured by volume at a temperature of 60 °F (15.5 °C). Therefore "80 proof" is 40% alcohol by volume (most of the other 60% is water), and pure alcohol would be "200 proof". If a 150-proof beverage is mixed half-and-half with water, the product is 75 proof.

No, I haven't. I'd be afraid to, really. The closest I've ever come to it is moonshine. The person who had it stuck a cinnamon stick in the jar and it tasted really good. Two shots and I was knocked for a loop. Of course, this was a while back, in my wilder days.

Yes, there is Everclear. But I wouldn't suggest drinking a whole lot of it.

I recall from my misspent youth there was a polish wood spirit at 160 proof. I understand that methanol is 210 proof.
