I doubt that you can. Whatever your opinion of military service, it’s his life -- his decision & there's not much you can do about it. The more you try to convince him that he's making a mistake, the more he will dig in his heels and be convinced that he's right -- it's just human nature. It looks like he knows your thoughts on the subject, so drop it.
Re. your low & way oversimplified opinion of the military: There's much more to military service than marching and carrying a "gun". First of all, it takes a special person to risk life & limb in defense of his country. Second, the military has helped many people achieve much more than they could have if they had not volunteered. I have friends that have made a career of it and loved it. BTW, these people have advanced degrees paid for by the govt. And I have other friends that did their stint in the fulltime military & then joined the reserves or guard. Still others that attended college after military service, got their degrees, again, paid for by the govt., and took different career paths.

You tell your friend that when he is away that you will be thinking of him and you will be praying that no harm comes his way. And also tell him how proud you are to know him. And then appologize to him for being an A hole.Because you have no right to be telling anyone what to do. I doubt very much that you are capable of carrying a gun and marching anywhere. Now give me 10 points because you deserved that brow beating.

Your friend sounds like he is a great American, unfortunately you don't. Your friend can do whatever he wants. We live in a free country and if he wants to be in the Marines that is his choice, not yours. Stop being a pansy and support your friends decision!

I have to disagree with you on this one. Although I am partial to the Air Force, it takes a special dedication and grit to be a Marine. I couldn't do it, and I am willing to bet there are actually very few who could.

Your friend made his OWN choice. He lives with it. You as a friend should support HIS choice because it is not always an easy thing to do making such a choice

Let him make his own choice. You have no control over a persons decision.
