Mithra was the Indo-Iranian God of light. He was born from the Earth bearing a torch and armed with a knife.
He rode and later killed the Cosmic Bull whose blood fertilized all vegetation. He was associated with the Greek Helios, and the Roman Sol Invictus. The first written references to Mithra date to 1400 BC. It was mainly a Persian religion but Romans spread it all over the ancient world. It was a strong force until the 4th century AD after which it declined rapidly.
