When you fall asleep your body is going into a rest state, in kids there body's are growing fast, there nerve endings are trying to shut down for the night.! My 3 year son does it too. It also can be there starting to dream, there brain begins to replay everything they did for the day and they learn in there sleep!

WTF???? I tried posting an answer and it disappeared. Anyway, I'm not writing it again - I'll just say this: Most of these posts are asking for trouble. I have tourettes (not bad, though) and know all about it. If someone is told they have tourettes, it is less likely to go away in the future. Just be a good parent, provide good food and a good home. Tourettes can be caused by a stressful environment. Medication is a bad idea. Treating tourettes early won't help in the long run, so don't rush into medication.

This happens to almost everyone while they fall asleep. Animals do it too. It seems like it has something to do with the muscles relaxing, but I forget.

Relaxation proses natural, Common in Girls more that guys. When you r in a deep imagination your body moves with it, even if you are dreaming. It does not go away. Imagine blood going through your body 90 times a min. F.Y.I. Your heart can shoot water 6 feet [when it is not in the body].

I dont think you have anything to worry about..but you can always ask his Dr.
My mom says I did this as a kid...and I still actually do it now, especially when I am over tired. My son also does this and he is now in his teens. Again, more so when he is over tired. His Dr just told me that it was his muschles relaxing and not to worry about it.
Good luck!

It is normal for that to happen. The muscles are in the process of relaxing. Therefore, causing them to "fire" or twitch.

I always done that myself. As long as it's not keeping him awake I wouldn't worry about it.
