You are right, we should not pray to idols nor should we rely on any other for intercession. Thats the beauty of the Messiah. He was sent to bridge the gap between man and God. His sacrifice accomplished so much for mankind. When a person places a Saint or anything before the Lord and Savior then they are not doing right. Nothing comes before the Lord. We can go to HIM directly and ask of HIM (Matt7:7-12). When I ask for forgiveness, I am not asking Mary or anyone else to intercede for me...it is unecessary.
Jesus gave us an example of how to pray and ask of God in Luke 11:1-13. Asking those who are considered Saints to intercede on your behalf is not biblical. The Holy Spirit is given to believers for intercession and revelation (Rom8:26). The Holy Spirit reveals and teaches all things. He intercedes to the Son and the Son to the Father. There are no other intercessors. The disciples prayed to God. Mary prayed to God. JESUS prayed to God the Father (Matt26:36-46).
I could go more indepth, but I feel that it is unecessary. You have had it revealed to you already through the word.

First off, I think you need to understand the concept of death. The dead knows nothing, there will be a resurrection when Jesus comes because the dead are in the grave until then - Daniel 12:2 & Phil 4.
Only God can forgive sins, the only sinless person to live on earth is Jesus and the Bible says that only he can forgive sins, no one else. Making images of so called saints is idol worship. The saints are resting until resurrection morning my good friend.

There is only one mediator and that is Christ. Many have been hoodwinked to pray through saints as do the catholic system. The catholic system was not established by christians but pagans and heathens who brought in their elements of worship many gods and through mediators into christianity.
1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Not even Mary is a mediator. No one but Jesus. Come to think of it, it is the same catholic church which killed these saints they idolize today after labelling them heretics when they refused to bow down into their system of worship during the dark ages.
Heb 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus

We believe that Jesus Christ conquer death once and for all. Saints, our deceased Christian brethren, can and do praise honor and worship Jesus Christ. We believe that through Jesus Christ we are still a community of believers, death does NOT separate us any longer, spiritually.
So when I ask a Saint to pray with me, for me, is like asking you to pray with me in community.
Where two or more are gathered in my name...Saints included.

No, saints are sheer humans just like Jesus! Isn't it ironic that while the Bible discourages idol worship, the followers of Jesus worship him as their idol!

I pray to a bundle of sticks wrapped up in mud, just like my parents did when I was a lad.

No; Jesus said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
