Sir Frank Whittle began jet engine research in 1930 and patented the design (there were no jets prior to this time). The Germans during WWII were credited with the first jet aircraft, the Me 262 except that they did not appear until late in the war (1944-45) when Germany was in its last throws. The British airliner "The Comet" was introduced in 1952 and was the first true jet airliner. The Bell XP-59 was the first US jet fighter, the first highly successful US jet fighter was the North American F-86 during the Korean War.

The Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 were the first American jet airliners. The Pratt and Whitney JT3 (J57) turbojet engines on the Boeing 707 produced about 10,000 lbs of thrust each and their were four of them. The current large high-bypass jet engines ( much cleaner and MUCH quieter then early jets) such as the GE 90 or Rolls-Royce Trent 900 produce as much as 90,000 pounds of thrust (400 newtons) for the Boeing 777.
