God is SPIRIT.
SPIRIT is very real; just not physical substance. Without God, the Universe would dissolve into "airy nothing".
God exists. Always has. Behold, He is the Lord, He changes NOT.

But if that is so, then the change in perspective is a change in the understanding by the Hewbrews, NOT a change in God.

There is a book called "The Source" by James Michener that is about a fictional archaeological dig called Makor in Israel. In the book, Michener traces the development of God. God originally was one of those geographically limited spirits who inhabited a specific mountain, he was named El Shaddai, which meant He of the Mountain. After the Israelites were expelled from their holy land it was philosophically necessary for their god to be universal, present everywhere, and that is how the concept developed of a non-physical god. Its an interesting book, it explains a lot about the history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as the continuing Israeli and Arab conflict. Give it a read if you get the chance, you won't be disappointed.
