Yes, IBS does cause stomach cramps. It also gets compounded by menstrual cramps (heightened IBS at the time of your period).

The only way I've found to reduce the pain and discomfort of cramps is heat, such as drinking tea or chicken broth or lying on a heating pad or soaking in a tub.

The stomach cramp pains are being caused by peristaltic contractions in the intestines. These contractions are more rapid and varied than in a normal person (meaning they occur at less of a routine pattern). IBS sufferers have a heightened pain sensitivity in the gut (doctors are unsure if we have more nerve endings or just simply feel it more), so the cramps are uncomfortable at best. Heat does 2 things. 1) If it is ingested liquid heat, you need the liquid anyway for all 3 kinds of IBS. 2) The heat soothes inflammation. Your gut is already inflamed or swollen, so this just calms things down. Heather Van Vorous recommends fennel tea, since fennel does some extra things too, but I have not tried it (she is an author about the IBS diet you should follow).

Good luck! Hope you feel better soon!

if your question is as i think you mean Cramps? then the answer is yes ibs does cause cramps in the lower part of your tummy this can be caused by not pass your bowls often so in turn this is causing constipation so you get cramps to make it ease up you need to look at your food intake on a daily basis and try to stay away from bread pasta cheese and try to eat more rougage to help move the bowls also sometimes alcohol can cause ibs to irritate which would also cause you discomfort i would also go see your doctor for sure.good luck.

Hi - yes IBS can cause stomach cramps. Many people with IBS are suffering from food sensitivites so the first step is to get yourself tested. Peppermint tea can help with cramps and your GP can also prescribe an enteric coated peppermint tablet which delivers the peppermint directly to where it needs to be.

Book yourself in with a nutritional therapist to help you with getting your diet right and invest in a course of colonics.

Yes, IBS can cause horrid cramps. I've had IBS since I was a baby, so obviously I've learned what not to eat and how to deal with the cramping and the inability to go to the bathroom normally...............First stop eating dairy foods such as cheese and lay off the milk, yogurt, etc. (unfortunately I love cheese so I'm stuck with cramps...lol). Eat lots of green veggies and apples, these are all natural remedies.

They're starting to recommend that people with IBS, or IBS-like symptoms be tested for celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats). A lot of people with celiac were misdiagnosed as having IBS for years. (18 years for me). It takes an average of 11 years for a person with celiac to be diagnosed.

Here's a webpage by the National Institutes of Health on celiac -
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/

And another from the Mayo Clinic -

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/celiac-disease/DS00319

If that starts sounding familiar here are a couple of message boards for people with celiac and other gluten intolerances.

http://www.glutenfreeforum.com
http://www.celiacforums.com

You can also be intolerant to other common foods and get the symptoms you are describing. Soy, corn, eggs, yeast, dairy, etc. You may want to think about keeping a food/symptoms journal and see if you can identify the culprit(s).

I hope you feel better soon.

yep and very painful ones at that. other IBS symptoms include extreme bowel movements (constipation etc) wind, bloating can also contribute to heartburn if you are really blocked up.

useually cause by a food intolerance useually wheat or dairy. if your having these problems cut one from your diet if it improves you know that is the cause.

elimination diet is the only way to know for sure if it is a intolerance to a certain food.

IBS is a syndrome because it can cause several symptoms. For example, IBS causes cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation.
