Most theatre people go to see tries to portray life in a realistic manner; people act the way they should, things look the way they should, and things happen the way they should; this is realism. Surrealism encompasses a lot of genres, but mainly rather than showing life as it is it tries to examine why things should happen and attempts to challenge audience's perspectives. By doing it in an unrealistic manner it can take the audience out of their comfort zone so they begin to consider things rather than take it for granted. It can have rather shocking, or humourous affects.
