I have a bulldog. I adopted him from a rescue. He was about 9 months old and had been beeten and burnned. He is missing some fur form his neck back to his butt. Some of it has grown back, some of never will. This was caused by bith scarring and by a fungal infection brought on by allergies. He had a cherry eye that the vet had to remove. Even after such a tough start to his life. I can say without any doubt that he is the best dog I have ever had!!!!!!!!! His name is Dutch. Dutch has a wonderful personallity. He thinks he is a lap dog. Mind you he is about 65 - 70 lbs. Yes, he does snore, pass gas, burp, and occassionally drools after drinking. But, I know alot of guys that do the same thing. Hehas had medical issues since he was a puppy. But, he has become a wonderful member of my family. I don't know how to explain just how great he is. Even with his health problems in the beginning, he is the best dog that I have ever had. We feed him Science Diet Lamb and Rice. It seems to help with his sensative skin. I also bath him with baby shampoo. He hates the water but loves the attention. I would also recomend that you look at the Olde English Bulldogge. This not quite the same as the akc bulldog. Dutch is an akc bulldog. The olde english bulldogge is a ltiile bit bigger and is healthier. They look very similar but they are different breeds. Dutch has been a blessing in my life and I can only say that if all bulldogs are as great as he is..... well I hope that you can have some of the same types of expieiances. I recomend Bulldogs very highly.

English bulldogs are susceptible to a very long list of health problems. Before you buy one, you really need to check out some bull dog websites very carefully. There are some healthy ones, but they also have some respiratory difficulties, skin problems and definitely can't take hot weather.

I have a English bulldog named Sid and yes they do cost a bit in Vet bills and the reason for that is because with this breed you want to make sure you do go to the Vet if something is wrong with them and you want to get their shots and check-ups. When you spend as much as you do on this breed you want to make sure they are well taken care of. They are prone to a lot of health problems but you can always do things to prevent them. Like I NEVER feed my dog table food. He may get a little piece of cheese or a ice cube as a treat. Why? because they are very prone to being obese and heart attacks. I want to prevent that! I think that if your worried about paying for all the Vet bills then maybe this may not be the right breed for you. Bulldogs are GREAT dog's but need to be well looked after.

The AKC calls them "bulldogs;" technically they are not "English Bulldogs." They often suffer from breathing difficulties, heart problems, many types of skin disorders and they are intolerant of heat or heavy exercise. You definitely want to find a good breeder for this breed that does all health clearances. I recently saw a bulldog at our local shelter that had been turned in by its owner because the dog regularly developed sores on its feet that required daily bathing in epsom salts. The vet bills had gotten so high, the owner could no longer afford to care for the dog.

check out the breeder thoroughly. If they've done general and breed specific health testing, they're obviously breeding for the betterment of the breed and trying to avoid breeding dogs that have hereditary health problems.
All breeds have some sort of health issues. Trying to breed away from those issues is the key.

An English Bully huh? Hope you've saved quite a bit. You will certainly pay for quality!

Your going to have vet bills regardless of what breed you get.

Hello! I have an English Bulldog= she is about five years old and hasn't had any serious health issues. They typically get them at an older age (about 7-9) if they live that long. She has had an eye infection, but thats about it. It depends on the age, tbe parents- all that stuff. But, they are 100 % worth any medical bill. :-)

personal opinion and experience, all purebreds have some serious health risks. with the big dogs it's always the hips. the little ones have problems with their knees. i had a 3/4 shepherd mix that developed diabetes. my vet said shepherds were prone to diabetes. a friend had a pure Newfoundland that was diagnosed with stomach cancer. vet said breed problem. i keep hearing about Irish Wolfhounds being prone to bone cancer. i understand that dalmations go deaf at an early age.
i don't know how much of this is true. i do know that with the exception of my diabetic shepherd, none of my mixes have ever had genetic health problems. go to a shelter and adopt a mix. they may even have a purbred or mix bulldog. it'll be all vetted and cheaper than buying the papers.

Every breed has health problems! As do mixed breeds - but in purebreds, they tend to be things that are specific to that breed. This is why it is important to buy from a reputable breeder who is testing & certifying their breeding dogs and working to eliminate genetic defects. Go to www.akc.org & find the closest local chapter of the Bulldog club - this is where you will find the good breeders that are actively involved in the breed. They want to improve the breed so it has a better future, in health & temperment. This is the best way to ensure getting the healthiest, most well-bred companion.

Whoever told you they are not worth it is crazy! They are worth every penny! Sure, they may have a couple problems here and there, but they are by far the best family dog you can find. They can't be in the heat and some have respiratory problems. That doesn't make them a bad breed. You just need to be able to take care of them and love them. They will be the most loyal pet you can find.

Every dog has a health issue at some point or another in their life. Cockers have ear and eye infections, shepherds have hip problems, daschunds have spinal problems (cause they very long and the spine only goes so far) etc. Just love your dog no matter what, take care of them as best you can and hope for the best.
