You work will probably put you up in a hotel, but see if they will get you a room at a NYU dorm. They rent them to anyone for the summer. You can then use all of the NYU buildings and meet people your age that way

When you are there get the weekly issues of Time Out New York. They list what is going on every week as well as many different types of coffee houses, restaurants and the like. There are loads of ways to meet people in New York. Hang out in Coffee Shops or bars. Volunteer at a soup kitchen or some other charitable cause. There a poetry readings, theatres, piano bars, museums and lots of other things. Put an add or two in craigslist. I'd hang out in either greenwich village, the east village or soho - there will be a lot of people your age in those places.

New Yorkers move quickly and talk quickly. They will fire off words at you and expect you to fire off words at them right back. They have cynical sense of humor that some people may find offensive. They arn't trying to be rude, that is just how they act in that part of the country. Have a thick skin, an open mind and have fun. You'll catch on. New Yorkers can be very helpful too. Ask them for directions or advice on where to eat or something like that. They might appear gruff to you on the outside, but you'd be surprised - they will often give you lots more information than you bargained for.

I think you will be able to meet people very easily.

Right away, you will have the other people in your training program to hang out with. Ask the instructors or the people at the school where some good local bars/restaurants are.

And take advantage of anyone else working/staying in the same hotel/residence that you are in. Everyone who lives here will have their favorite bar/shop/restaurant/deli that they can send you to.

All you need to do is strike up a simple conversation with the person standing next to you. As a life-long NYC resident, I can tell you that I am quite used to people from out of town coming up and starting conversations with me!

Also, depending on what your interests are, plan out some places you would like to visit. If you are interested in architechture, take some tours of important buildings.

Why not put an ad out on Craigslist and see if someone else is there for a month or two, and are looking for friends too.

I've found NYC very friendly. Just head into a cafe, sit at the bar and you'll find people to chat it up with.

So safe there too. You'll have fun. Wish you the best!

When I went to NYC for a week I wasn't even planning on meeting people but chatted with quite a few. A couple of people gave me hook-ups to local clubs, it was cool. Just walk out on the street and ask someone where's the local hangouts and possibly get their # to meet up later or just for directions.
