The earliest known case of HIV-1 in a human was from a blood sample collected in 1959 from a man in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. Genetic analysis of this blood sample suggested that HIV-1 may have stemmed from a single virus in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
The virus has existed in the United States since at least the mid- to late 1970s. From 1979-1981 rare types of pneumonia, cancer, and other illnesses were being reported by doctors in Los Angeles and New York among a number of male patients who had sex with other men(gay). These were conditions not usually found in people with healthy immune systems.
In 1982 public health officials began to use the term "acquired immunodeficiency syndrome," or AIDS, to describe the occurrences of opportunistic infections, Kaposi's sarcoma (a kind of cancer), and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in previously healthy people.
In 1983, scientists discovered the virus that causes AIDS.

I always thought people started getting sick in 1979 in the USA but they didnt know why and by the time 1984 rolled around people wanted answers because so many people were getting sick so the current aids test came about in 1984.

i was just reading and this is a quote from the africaspeaks site "However, it is clear that the first AIDS cases were recorded in gay men in Manhattan in 1979"

And as far as the aids/hiv conspiracies go, ill let you all decide because i still have no answers.

nobody knows for sure, it was first discovered and identified in the early or mid 80s (i forget what year exactly) but many people were infected at that time so it had probably been there awhile already. the 2 most popular theories as to when/how the virus originated take place in the 1920s or 1950s, and the first cases were documented in the mid-late 70s (who knows how long it had been misdiagnosed and gone under the radar) so id guess it probably came to the US sometime between 1930-1970s

AIDS came to the US in 1985 - discovered in five gay men. It was discovered for the first time in general in 1977 in Africa. It started as SIV in chimps and scientists think that it mutated and crossed over to humans via hunting accidents.

1980-ish kinda, it was caused by a monkey and it doesn't affect it so if were humans how can we get a monkey diesease, I bet the gears in your head are going a human had sex with a monkey? No that is not what caused it it was because there was a African guy who was cleaning a monkey then he cuts his hand and gets HIV then he has sex with a sailor so this person was gay or bi (that's what the disease was classified as) and it was first seen in California then it was spread thro ports ( Galveston, Corpus Christi, etc.) so now everyone can get it all becase of the reese monkey!
