The entire truck vibrates and make a low hum like VRRRT( sound wise). Seems to happen when accelerator is pushed in slightly, such as when keeping a constant speed while going up hill. I think it is the torque converter, but what do you think could cause this? Vibration is anywhere from mild to quite severe, but overall driving is not affected. Vibration intensifies when the accelerator is applied more, but stops when foot is taken off the accelerator pedal. 4.6 L Straight Six, base model, no bells, no whistles. What do you think, and what is the basis of your training?

If the vibration occurs when the engine is under load, such as going up a hill and coming in and out of overdrive, feels sort of like driving over a washboard. I would fault the torque converter. The torque converter shudder can be caused by worn trans fluid. Try replacing the tranny fluid, all of it, including removing the torque converter drain plug and fluid pan, it may solve the problem and be cheaper than a converter replacement. If the vibration occurs on flat land and is a constant vibration and stops when you let your foot off of the gas, have the engine checked for concerns such as a misfire, EGR problems, or vacuum leaks.

Sounds like the u-joints in the driveshaft, I would remove the driveshaft and check each cap. If this just started doing this most likely this is the problem. Could be rear end bearings, but start with the u-joints. Ford also had an issue with the straight 6 making noises, there was a TSB issue for this years ago. If you think for sure it is in the tranny then a full drain and refill of the torque convertor and pan and filter may be the first thing to do. There is a plug on the convertor that allows you to drain it on your truck. Ford had a TSB for this as well

The vibration can be due to worn clutch packs in the automatic transmission. Basically needs to be overhauled. Take to a trans shop for inspection from professional.

i own a repair shop, and bad universal joints will act like this ,on one..i have seen a lot of this especially on the fords,,they have a pre-balanced drive shaft,,so if you replace a joint please be sure and mark the yolk which way it came off of it,it will make a difference in the balance of it,,there's a slight chance the torque converter may be causing this,,first check your joints,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.
