I know nothing about Diabeties, however a friends father has it .the Dr.that treats him for it told my friend to make sure her dad gets his shot everyday.. she told me she doesnt give it everyday because if his numbers are LOW she dont think he needs it.I said I would think his Dr. would know if he needed it everyday or not.I always thought if you were on insulin shots you DO take them everyday, the question is how MUCH do you take,as to how HIGH or LOW your numbers are.please anyone with accurate knowledge, please respond. so I can let her know. Also she has a woman that checks on her dad daily, and she told my friend she has him drink orange juice EVERY morning. I thought that was to bring your levels up if they were too low? like I said I am not educated on Diabeties, but would really appreciate any imfo I can get.

Most doctors and health care providers aren't all that well versed on how to take care of a diabetic. I recommend a book by Patrick Quillin on my diabetes info webpage which you should get for your friend and their dad. It's wonderful. I posted my most recent blood test results on the page and it shows that I'm not making this stuff up... my blood sugar results are quite good. There are plenty of other useful links on my webpage also. Check it out:

The shot should be taken as the Dr. as told him. When you are diabetic you body is not producing insulin and the shot replaces that. If there is no shot, then there is no insulin. Most insulin is in a time release formula, in that it is absorbed into the bloodstream over the course of the day. If your blood sugar numbers are low that means that you have not had enough food vs. the amount of insulin that has been taken. That's when he should have something to eat or drink some orange juice.

If the shot is not given then after he eats something his blood sugar will shoot up very high and damage to the body will occur. The damage is small, but over time becomes significant and can lead to blindness, amputation, failure of internal organs, etc.

If your friends dad has lots of low blood sugar incidents then the Dr. should be informed and he/she will change the amount of insulin in the shot.

With some diabetics, the doctor orders a sliding scale for the amount of insulin to be given according to the blood sugar level (taken by the glucometer). Sometimes they should check it 4x a day. Your friend should really find out from her fathers doctor. Also, orange juice is given to raise blood sugar. However, in moderation it may be given with a meal. If given by itself ( as with any sweet) it can cause a drop in the level with in an hour or 2. When the blood glucose level taken is low, a protein snack should be given, peanut butter, milk etc.. Your friend should follow the doctors orders for her father. Maintaining diet and diabetic regimen is extremely important. A diabetic can have other complications, these may be lessened by following his plan.

Im not sure what your question is but diabetes is caused by insensitivty to insulin by your other tissues. Basically your body doesn't respond as well to insulin. Normally insulin helps your body take in the sugar taht you eat. If you body is not responding to the insulin, your sugar levels go up and this has devastating long term consequences. Basically your body thinks that it is starving, b/c no sugar (used for energy) can enter the cells, eventually it voided via urination along with lots of water. Generally diabetics take shots of insulin before meals to help the sugars (carbs) they eat enter the cells. There are many kinds of insulin (short, intermediate, and long acting).
Hopefully I have clarified DIabetes Mellitus.

only a doctor could tell how much of shots one require depending on age sugarlevel and the type of food one eats.

Remember the purpose of insulin shots is to keep the sugar level lower, all diabetic will certainely experience low sugar when controling blood sugar. It is part and parcel of the treatment. Moreever you should not go by sugar level reading by mere glucose meters. It only tells superficialy and at that time. This will only help you in deciding what type of foods to eat.

The real blood sugar lies in A-1c report which shows you the exact picture. This test should be taken once in 3 months.

Tell your friend not to become her own doc. Please visit diabetes.org and learn many more complications and remedies what a diabetic has to go thru.

wow...let's see how to explain this....

there are two ways to perscribe insulin that i am personally familiar with.

1.) sliding scale

-this is where a dr. perscribes that the patient take his/her blood sugar a certain number of times a day, for instance 2-3 times. the reading will determine how much insulin to administer, if any at all. most of the time if it is 50 or lower, none will be given.

2.) most of the time a dr. will perscribe a set number of units to inject each AM/PM regardless of blood sugar.

i am guessing your case is number 2. you are right about the orange juice thing.....it is given when blood sugar is too low. they should be following dr.'s instructions, but also, do not hesitate to ask any and all questions of the dr. it sounds as though he may not actually need so much insulin, but his doctor will be able to answer questions specific to his case.

hope this helps....good luck......we all need friends like you!!!

i am a diabetic who takes shoots wit h every meal but if i check my numbers before a meal and my numbers are low i may not take my shot it would depend on what i was going to eat if i were going to eat very little carbs. and i took that shoot I would bottom out and really would need that orange juice. if gives her father orange juice every morning she would have to count that into his card exchanges for that meal if i take my meds like I'm supposed to do i would wake up every morning with low blood sugars as i have in the past i relieved this symptom by eating a half of sandwich between 10 -12 midnight so i don't have to rush for the juice first thing in the morning you can go to the web site dlife.com they have a lot of info on diabetes and just eating healthy also sometimes you have to use your own judgment as far as your shots. sometimes i would take all of my shots before my meals like im supposed to do then i lose my appetite then i go low and have to make myself drink or eat something sweet
