It's a nasty bug going around right now. Has gone into pneumonia in some people. If your sputum is not discolored (i.e. green) there won't be much they can do. Viral infections can't be treated with antibiotics just the bacterial infections which are often secondary.

Rest seems the only thing that does much good. Cough suppressing expectorants help, and keep your fluid intake up.

I am not a doctor but can tell you that a few weeks ago I had the same symptoms you are describing. There was no OTC medication that could have killed off this type of infection. You do need a doctor and asap.I also refused to go to the doctor until I passed out from coughing so hard.

After visiting, the doctor told me I had the upper respiratory illness,Bronchitis. He gave me an anti biotic and put me on Prednisone which is an anti inflammatory Steroid to reduce swelling in my chest cavity. After about a week I was just about back to normal when I started getting a stuffy nose again. This time I went straight to his office ,no playing around.I told him the whole story all over again and he prescribed Flonase.I guess my sinuses were running into my throat and the infection was spreading into
my lungs.I took the Flonase and after about 2 days everything cleared up and I have been feeling great ever since.

My advice to you is please don't wait .If you want to get better go see your doctor he will know what is wrong more than anyone else.I do hope you feel better fast. Good Luck.

sounds like the flu to me.
I suffer from asthma so i understand the breathing problems, unfortunitely if you have asthma or broncitis taking over the counter meds are not goo for you or your breathing. They austually make it worse. Try taking a shower with a lot of steam or simply let the hot water run in the shower and sit outside of it. The steam from the shower will help to open your airway and it will help with the sinus stuffiness. If your symptoms don't go away you should go to the doctor because you might very well have a breathing problem.

I had something very similar a couple of weeks ago and it was bronchitis. You need to go to the doctor, because it will only get worse. I broke a rib from coughing, and my best friend collapsed a lung from coughing when she had bronchitis last month. It's not anything to mess with. Your doctor will probably give you some antibiotics, an albuterol inhaler to open the airways, and possibly an expectorant to help get the crud out of your lungs. But he can't help you get better if you don't go see him.

Please go to the doctor. Sounds like a broncial infection and possibly sinus infection on top of that. There are anti viral medicines now as well as antiboitics. If it was a common cold you would be feeling better by now. Since you are not it is important to go to the doctor. Hope you helpful husband does not come down with the same sysptoms. You can bet he would have already carried his happy little butt to the doctor's office.

It sounds like you have a chest cold, or perhaps flu, in which case chicken soup and acetaminophen (paracetamol in UK) are all you need. If fever and/or shortness of breath, or if you have other illnesses or conditions that make your health a bigger issue than for most of us, you may need to consult a physician.

Just about everyone I work with has had the exact same symptoms this past week (but not me). These are classic flu symptoms. So your husband is right if you have the flu - not much can be done at this point but to rest and releive the symptoms with OTC meds.

I'm sorry to say I wouldn't listen to your husband. Doctors aren't in the habit of saying there's nothing I can do. You may have an upper respiratory infection, flu or a bad cold. My advice would be go see your doctor, he/she may give you a prescription for an antibiotic.
