Many diabetics have impaired sensation in the feet and legs and cannot detect injury when it occurs. It's safer not to use heating pads or other devices that involve temperature. Even a hot bath or shower can be hazardous. As you are a diabetic, it would be wise for you to learn about diabetic foot care and more. You should also speak to your endocrinologist or Diabetes Nurse Educator about this general topic.

When a person is a severe diabletic, they will eventually develop
what is called neuropathy, which means they won't sense things as acutely, as a nondiabetic individual.

Thus the diabetic with neuropathy will not feel the cold as really cold, nor the heat as really hot.

With a heating pad on a severe diabetic with neuropathy, and not sensing how hot the heating pad really is, the result could easily be a very severe burn of the skin.

Thus diabetics need to avoid using heating pads.

The heating pads are made to put out massive amounts of heat. Most(not all diabetics though) don't have good blood flow to hands, feet, legs etc. The heating pads can and will cause burns as well as additional damage to those body parts already injured form the diabetes.

Because some diabetics have nerve damage (neuropathy) which can cause numbness. If the heating pad were too hot, a diabetic with neuropathy might not feel it and could be injured by burns.

Heating pads can easily burn anyone, but a burn or any other skin abrasive injury can lead to disaster for a diabetic. Diabetic patients don't heal as well or quickly as most people and it can turn into other severe problems.

Heating pads are not suggested for use by diabetics due to the risk of a burn that odds r, won't heal. I use a tube sock that is filled with beans(u can use rice or corn too) and sew the ends up. Microwave for a few minutes and u get the warmth without the risk of leaving on a heating pad to burn the skin.

Because diabetics can suffer nerve damage from their elevated sugar levels....which in turn can cause diabetic nueropathy or numbness. Heating pads or electric blankets or other devices can cause skin damage to a diabetic without them knowing it because of the decrease in feeling
