Blood coming out while coughing can be something very serious like lung cancer, however, your brother is probably a little young for that and it is highly unlikely. The best bet is that he has a viral infection, something that should clear within the next 10 days. If it does not, seek medical attention.

The amount of blood is the biggest indication of any serious problems. If he has been coughing excessively due to a cold or flu, that can cause tiny blood vessels to burst in the throat. Sometimes when blood is mixed with saliva it can seem like a lot more blood than there actually is. In any case, I would always get a second opinion just to be on the safe side.

It's not unusual to have trace hemoptysis (coughing out a small amount of blood) with a cough. If all his tests were normal then it was probably just a broken capillary, a small superficial vein. If you cough hard enough or long enough, it can happen. Some people's capillaries are just more fragile than others. It can be alarming but as long as the amount of blood is small, there's no cause to worry.

Something could have just cut is throat or something, or even a nose bleed that seeped into the back of his throat when he coughed. if the doctors said hes OK than i don't think its anything worth freaking about.
