My first reaction was to want to take back his Christmas presents :) Seriously, we are really struggling to find a consequence that will actually have an impact on him. We often struggle with either being too hard or too easy on him.

My first reaction was to want to take back his Christmas presents :) Seriously, we are really struggling to find a consequence that will actually have an impact on him. We often struggle with either being too hard or too easy on him.
Just wanted to add a little more info:
He is a great kid and we have very few issues with him. He is respectful and kind- however, ever since he has started middle school- the mouth has come out. I have noticed it with his friends and when I have been at his school. He goes to a private school, yet I see little effort from the teachers/admistrators to stop words like stupid, shut up, and idiot.
The context in which this occured was this- he was studing for his final exam and he had to identify something on a diagram. He didn't get the answer right and blamed me for showing him the wrong picture. He then said" well, your just stupid". Hope that clears things up a bit.
Thanks for all the answers.

I have taught my daughter that respect is something that is earned, but that even if she disagrees she still has an obligation to be polite. Was your son right? Or was he just being naughty?
With so much arrogance, deception and rudeness in this world, it is wise to teach our kids to question. I dont know that I would punish him, rather I would want to find out what prompted it in the first place. Then I would suggest he use common sense and good manners and warn him that there will be consequences next time.

Basically, it is wrong for a 12 year old to ever call an adult stupid. If it was done to the adult's face, it is really wrong and the child should apologize in person - after he gets a hard spanking and mouth washed out with Ivory soap.
If the adult was a parent of the kid, it is the same punishment as well as the kid stays in his room after school - with no computer or games, etc. Give him extra homework such as book reports to complete.
As for Christmas presents, do take back some expensive one he wanted such as the new Playstation.
Adults must get respect from kids.

That entire tale is the dumbest element i have ever heard. is this female lower than the concept all center schoolers date? because that's sooo not the case. you may favor to bypass to directors on the faculty and communicate the regulations, which incorporates taped telephone conversations. that's as a lot as them to furnish you some suggestion as to what plan of action you need to take. also, contact the boy's mother and father and provides you them the same information. finally, tell your daughter that she's too youthful for this and she'll meet the right guy at the same time as the time is ideal.

The thing with kids at that age is you find the more harsh the punishment the more they resent you and try to justify what they did as right.
Heres some age relevant ones and I use them on my younger ones.
Computer, TV, and video game restrictions for a 12 year old a week should be good, fill his weekend with helpful chores and have him write and applogy or an essay to on how people are different and no one deserves to be called stupid.

maybe the adult is stupid. This whole making kids respect people because they are older is wrong, now days we have serious problems by not letting our kids speak out a little. Were you there to see what happened? I would't punish till all the fact are in. By the way taking xmas presents away would be last to me. Take tv privledges away if it comes out he was wrong or talk to him after all he is 12. Let him decide his punishment and work it out.

My first reaction would have been to pop the kid in the mouth. I think that taking back christmas presents is a bit harsh. Grounding might work...obviously an apology to the adult in question is in order...

hmmm, a 6th grader.
i think he should be grounded.
grounding works quite well if your kids likes to go play with friends or even likes video games or tv time.
i would take away the class christmas party or ground him for a weekend or no video games or tv or computer for a week.
get creative. the punishment doesn't always fit the crime. sometimes, it's just a generic punishment for doing something wrong, like calling someone stupid. that's a big deal and he needs to know it.
take care:)

Yeah, opt for too hard on him.
I got back handed once when i called my mom stupid.
Never did it again. Never called an elder stupid or anything bad like that again in my life.
There was no lapse of time though. "stupid" came off my lips and the back of moms hand met them two seconds later. It was the only time I ever got slapped in my life.
You can bet i never did that again.

Community service. Set him up in an environment where adults know what they are doing and he may not have a clue. Better yet, a volunteer act where policemen are present so they can clue him in on respect. It will build character as well as respect.
