Smoking does not affect your medicines. When you smoke a cigarette the smoke is inhaled into your lungs. When you take a medicine it goes into your digestive system and is then processed by your liver and then excreted from the body by your kidney. Hence, you see both enter totally different systems.

The only case where smoking might (and a big might) have an effect on medicines is when they are inhaled as in the case of bronchial asthma when the medicine is inhaled by means of aerosol or any other inhaling device. But this to is just an assumption and most probably even in that case their will be no affect.

Smoking can however lead to bronchial asthma due to constriction of air passages. And it has been linked to cancer. But as far as medicines are concerned – there is no link. Thank you.

YES ! Smoking can effect some meds. I am on certain drugs that smoking changes the effectiveness. One of them is Uniphyl. On the package it says to tell your doctor if you quit or start smoking while on this drug. On other drugs smoking some how works on the effectiveness or how it works once it enters your system.

About 20 years ago a DR gave me some meds, I was told I couldn't drink or smoke while taking this med.

She wouldn't change the script, I had to find another Dr.
