No, you cannot get lead poisoning from breathing in paint fumes. The nausea you are experiencing is simply a result of any noxious stimuli such as foul odors. Prolonged exposure can have negative impacts on your health by so long as you are painting in a well ventilated area you should be fine.

Oh and if you're pregnant just get your husband or boyfriend to paint for you, its a fair trade that if you're going to be giving birth he may has well do the easy work.

As already said, modern paint contains no lead.

If you are using an oil based paint (something you'd need mineral spirits or paint thinner to clean brushes with), then the solvents are dangerous to breath in an enclosed space. Either paint in a well ventilated space or you can get a solvent respirator at the hardware store - make sure it has an activated charcoal filter - not simply a paper filter. The charcoal will adsorb the pertroleum based fumes.

If it's a water-based, latex paint, then the fumes may stink, but won't harm you.

There are basically three categories of paint which pregnant women could be exposed to: latex, oil, and enamel. The degree of toxicity during pregnancy is challenging to predict because there are currently no methods of measuring actual exposure. The likelihood of paint toxicity depends on the chemicals and solvents found in the paint along with the amount of exposure.

What about pregnancy and household paint use?
The most common question related to pregnancy and paint exposure has to do with painting the new baby's nursery or decorating the house before the baby arrives. Unfortunately, there are no studies that document the effects of household painting on pregnancy and the developing baby.

Currently, the assumption is that household painting involves very low levels of exposure. The recommendation is to avoid exposure to oil-based paints, leads and mercury. You should minimize exposure to latex paints that contain ethylene glycol ethers and biocides. Ideally, you should get someone else to do the job for you.

Almost no paints on the market contain lead, so don't panic! Most water based indoor paint, although the smell of the evaporating paint components can make you feel nauseous they pose no long term health risks (I'm assuming that you don't paint for a living!). However, always ventilate the spaces that you paint to the outside air. This also helps the paint dry quicker.

I wouldn't worry about the paint so much as the thinner used.

The thinner in DuPont's Immeron can raise H--- with your lungs

Toluene, lacquer , enamel thinners are all tough on your lungs

MEK, is a lot new than lead, caused birth defects.
Naptalene is another bad boy

If your prego use only water based paints

Modern paint doesn't contain lead. If you paint did contain lead, the cans should have been marked, indicating lead based paint.
Read the label on the paint cans or asked the business where the paint was purchased. I doubt that you have paint containing any lead.

In Australia, and I am pretty sure this is the case in most other countries, but lead is banned from being in paint due to its dangers, not only to adults, but to children.

If your paint contains lead, strip it immediately and start again. If you have inhaled fumes and you are worried about its effects please see your obstetrician.
