Now that I'm vegan again, the one thing I miss is butter, real butter. Margarine is NASTY, it feels waxy and tastes like oil with salt. The flavor is sooo artificial. In fact, oil with salt would be more natural than this synthetic spread called margarine.

Needless to say, I can't stand margarine. Butter is GOOD! However, butter is cruel, so it's a no-go. Does ANYONE know if a good replacement for butter? Not margarine please, it's very apparent I won't eat it, much less buy it.

Anyone?

There is a spread made with olive oil and has that classic olive oil greenish tinge to it. It is pretty good, not butter, but definitely not margarine.

Earth Balance is good, but if you think it tastes too much like margarine, then you won't like it as it is a 'healthy' margarine product with a buttery taste.

I've found that flax oil and certain extra virgin oils and coconut butter are very buttery tasting. Flax oil on popcorn for instance is perfect. Not the same, no, but close. Anyway, 'real' butter made the old fashioned way (not boiled) is very hard to find these days, so likely what you really love is just he modern manufactured butter and still not the best you can get, still a mock-butter compared to 'real' home-made-straight-from-the-family-cow butter. Check out the Omeg Oil company, Udo's Choice company, I like those ones.

You could try a vegan product called "Earth Balance". Yes, it is margarine, but it doesn't taste like most margarines out there. It is supposed to be like butter, but it's been so long since I've had butter I can't honestly say how much it tastes like it. It's worth a shot - it may just be what you're looking for :)

Just to add to what has been said above, Earth Balance makes another product called Soy Garden that is even better for you, and tastes great! My family is not even Vegetarian but they have stopped buying butter in favor of this because it tastes so good.
Give it a try!

I'm with other answers on the Organic Earth Balance Whipped Buttery Spread! It taste just like it, and the ratio of oils that it has in it is good for your heart! (Oils in margarine could be trans-fats/partially hydrogenated oils! which are toxic for your body).

It is good to eat plain, but when baking with it, try to use half Earth Balance (for the buttery taste) and half vegetable shortening (to keep it nice and soft after baking with it. Total Earth Balance leads to a hard texture - which for sugar cookies would be OK I guess).

I bought vegan butter from Trader Joe's. It taste and cooks like real like butter. It's called GFA Brand's Earth Balance. It comes in a green and white tub.
Tricked my husband-he never knew. Trader Joe's also carries Toffuti which is vegan cream cheese.

Organic smart Balance or Earth Balance is by far the best butter alternative. I started buying it awhile back and I finished a whole tub before I realized it was vegan.

If you are vegan, you can't have most, if any margarine. Most of them contain buttermilk. I'm still searching for a decent replacement. Good luck!

Be careful, some margarine's are not suitable for vegetarians/vegans, and yes its horrible! lol, you say butter is cruel...but you can easily purchase butter than is farmed from cows who are free to roam fields, have offspring that need supply of milk and are not separated or any such cruel thing like this. If you simply search in goodly for the criteria of uncruel butter, you'll find dozens to match your criteria.

Hope this helps! :D

they sell soy butter in most supermarkets, you can find it in the health food section, they also have it in the health food stores. It's pretty good.
