Pneumonia is a clinical diagnosis. Lab tests may be helpful to classify the pneumonia into bacteria or viral. "walking" pneumonia- is actually caused by the bacteria- Mycoplasma- which is a very small organism- looks more like a virus then a bacteria-- usually people with this pneumonia have an abnormal lung exam, nl WBC, low grade fever and an abnormal x-ray. It is treated with antibiotics similar to Erythromycin like Zithromax.
Some other disease processes can be "mistaken for pneumonia' such as asthma or inflammatory lung conditions.
Sometimes even different Dr's disagree as to the type and cause of the "pneumonia" . My advice would be to lsiten to your MD- but if you are not getting better with your current treatment- get a second opinion. Good luck. Hope this is helpful

It's not routine, but does happen. And in extreme cases, some patients are too sick to be able to mount a fight against the infection.
