I'm hacking a cough, taking an inhaler and I have been taking tylenol for the past two days.....does zinc help at all?

Well... Tylenol and other cold medications will only suppress the symptoms and make you feel better but the duration will not decrease much. If you want to get over a cold faster, zinc and echinacea will help... Personally I use Cold-eeze and it has always worked for me as long as I take it at the onset of my cold symptoms. Other products out there are Airborne and Zycam (sp?). based on personal experience, cold-eeze works best with colds starting at the throat but does very little with colds starting in the nasal cavity.

Moreover, chicken soup is an old remedy and still around because it does help. Vitamin C will also help with your cold as it is an antioxidant. When your body is fighting off the virus, it produces many free radicals within your body and that's when antioxidants are good for you. There is evidence of vitamin C helping with the duration of a cold... of course nothing is signficantly conclusive.

Good luck and I hope you'll feel better soon!

Zinc is supposed to help if you take it at the first signs of a cold. I have heard conflicting stories about Zicam though. Take plenty of Vitamin C or drink orange juice every day. Garlic or garlic supplements is great for the immune system. For coughs, I use Vicks Nyquil Cough at bedtime. There's a new cough syrup out called Desylum or something like that which is supposed to stop coughs for 12 hours. But if it is not going away, I would go see a doctor and get a good antibiotic like Zithromax to knock it. Also, you might want to keep on hand the product Airborne. It was developed by a 2nd grade teacher because she kept getting sick. You take it at the 1st signs of a cold, flu, etc. or when you are going to be in enclosed areas with a lot of people such as airplanes, meetings, restaurants, etc. Many of the celebrities are said to be using it.

The quickest way to get rid of the cold sore is to leave it alone and let it dry up on its own..There are a few home remedies you can try before you go and buy the expensive stuff...i know this will sound gross but trust me it works..Get yourself a Qtip and clean your ears then take the earwax and place it over the sore carefully...Make sure you dont rub too hard or you will pop the sore...And let it sit there for a while...It acts as a barrier and detoxs the chemicals your sore is dispusing..Repeat over the next two days and it should be dry and well on its way to recovery..Another thing you can use and wouldnt hurt is to go and get a visit from your DR..and tell them they are recurring and ask for a prescription for Zovirax...That is the best out there and will clear it up from first notice in 3 days...Just make sure you keep the area dry and clean...Dont lick the sore it only makes it sore and dont pick at it...For pain use baby orajel on it..It wipes the pain for a while as a temporary fix...Hope this was helpful...another thing that dries it up is whiskey..It will burn at first then you will notice it dries up fast and then gone...

Sleep, sleep, SLEEP! The more you can sleep, the better. A LOT of water to flush the toxins out of your system - drink water until it's "coming out of your ears"! Vitamin C and echinacea are also good.

I hesitate about your condition, though - have you been to a doctor yet? If you have to use an inhaler, it may mean that you have bronchitis or another condition that may be alleviated by antibiotics. I recommend going to the doctor if your condition worstens or if you aren't feeling better in the next day or two.

A good way to get over a cold is to get plenty of rest, take some vitamin c, and relax. Don't stress yourself out, that will only weaken your immune system.

Small early studies made zinc look promising. Bigger, better, and disappointing studies followed. To date, there is no strong evidence that anything shortens the course of a cold. Eat your chicken soup and wait it out. Gesundheit.
