Registered Nurse here; Yes people have fractured there ribs from severe coughing spells, not a common occurrence but does happen. Here's one way to tell. Take a deep breath if pain increases on inspiration, filling the lungs with air, then it's even a greater possibility that you have fractured a rib or pulled or torn a muscle. If the pain remains the same upon taking a real deep breath, and doesn't increase, than odds are in your favor that you did not fracture a rib. Fracture ribs are usually very painful, and taking a deep breath with a freshly fractured rib will usually send the individual to the emergency room quick, for the pain is intense. Thanks for the opportunity to address your question.

Im going to the doctor today because i think i have fractured a rib from coughing. I just got out of the hospital a week ago with pneumonia and for the past few days i have coughed so hard. I felt something pop during a coughing spell last night. I can barely breathe today.

I have had a terrile rough cough for over 4 weeks. Went to the ER twice no pnuemonia or whooping cough. Did two chest xrays and this cough will NOT go away. I quit smoking over 3 months ago i only smoked for a year before that and a pack would last 4 days. Its to the point my cough sends a sharp pain through my right side ribcage and when i lay down it hurts and is hard to breathe. PLS PLS What should i do ???? Any suggestions or reccomdations.

Maybe something got bruised. I wouldn't think you could crack a rib from coughing, but stranger things have happened. I've had a pain like that before and it went away after a couple of days.

Yes, I have Osteopenia, not quite Osteoporosis, and have a cracked rib from coughing too hard too much. Not much to do but tape it up, take a pain killer, rest and hope to God that you don't sneeze

Absolutely!! Just did it today. After my visit with my doc it was confirmed by X-ray. I'm a 47 yr old healthy male, with no bone problems at all. So the bottom line is yes, you can break a rib from severe coughing and you do not have to have osteoporosis for it to happen. Believe me when I say that it is painful. I actually felt it break when it happened. Hope this helps answer your question.
