Well, I suppose the decorations would be the usual Christmas/New Year theme. As for the food, again, a good range of alcohol, and non-alcoholic beverages to meet all tastes. The food, make it stuff that's easy to carry around on a paper plate in one hand and a drink in the other lol. Lots of small nibbly stuff...... and you can get very inventive with nice tasting things on top of little crackers. Lots of dishes full of individual chocolates in those little jackets... some little sweet delicacies like candied fruits, and petit fours Cheese boards with a selection of different cheeses and an ample supply of plain crackers alongside, in a variety of kinds. Decorative bowls of fruit. Don't forget the wine. Lots of burgundy, white, rose, and sweet.
One friend of ours once at a N.Y. bash had a big barrel full of folded papers with "New Year Resolutions" and "Horoscopes" written on. The idea was to g et everyone who is invited to write their own (maybe about 10 or 20 apiece, depending on how many are going to be there) Then when they arrive, they drop their papers into the barrel, and at some point in the Bash..-- just before, or just after the Magical Midnight Hour, everyone dips into the barrel and pulls out a paper, then gets a good laugh at what is written on it.
Ohh, and put out a big bowl of little cherry tomatoes in a really nice bowl on a bed of lettuce leaves. They just look neat, and interesting, and different... and they DO get eaten.

You could pick a generation or two (depending on how you all are), find random facts and pictures on the internet, print each one out on a sheet of paper, and hang them up. (Could be things like album covers from the 80's, a news clip, trivia fact for a certain year, photo of a famous person, etc...) Number them all. When people show up, they get a card with their name on it, and during the evening, they have to look at all the tidbits and write down what YEAR they thought each was from. A little after New Years, see who had the most right answers on their cards and they win a little prize. Even a gag gift.

Should be a total hoot listening to people chatting and trying to figure out when say, Michael Jackson's Thriller album came out. Or when Gorbachev came to power. And with drinks in the mix, it gets even funnier.

Is it too late to make it a theme party? How about a Roaring '20s party? My sister went to one and it was a blast! Play lots of jazz music, maybe hire someone for an hour to teach guests how to dance the Charlston (or look up information on line and post up instructions), serve "moonshine" or just fun cocktails like cosmopolitans, martini's and bathtub "gin" (just line your bathtub with a Hefty bag, fill it with ice, and use it as a cooler and keep beer bottles/kegs there. This is one theme party guys usually like because they get to dress up like gangsters, smoke cigars, and carry toy guns.
