Let me start by saying that I am a very small and tiny person - I had a disease when I was born that affected my growth harm-ones - so my body today is that of a two year old - I am also incontinent. When I go to church with my ladies and I wet my diapers they will always take me to the nursery for changing - the church will not allow me to attend any classes with my age group because of the extreme size difference and the diaper situation. So i must go the class with my ladies and they must take me to the nursery because the other class members get a little up set - Even though I have a two year old body these people get unset if I need a diaper change - You talk about embarrassing - I can talk and listen to the teachers - but no to diaper changes - and in the nursery there are young girls my age that are in there changing the real babies - and want to help when I have a change - No it is not right - but I just put up with it because it is part of my life and I just must accept what I can not chang.

Sorry, I do feel for you and this situation !!!!

Is it fair to burden any volunteer organization with someone whose special needs are so great that he will take up an inordinate share of their time? The nursey staff at our church is two 18-year olds who have had a basic CPR class. They don't have any other special training. They have 3 - 6 children a morning. They would be swamped if presented with a 15-year old who still wore diapers. I would be afraid he would hurt a toddler inadvertently, too.

This is a question with no good answer.

No- not fair to the boy and it's certainly not fair for the nursery workers!! I work in the 1 year old room nursery at church once a month and I would be opposed to watching him. For one, I'd be very uncomfortable changing him PLUS he'd be a danger to the babies.

If he needed his diaper changed- which would be rare (probably) his mother or father should be called in to do it. At our church we have a number system and each child has a # assigned to them and if the parents are needed that # is flashed on the big screen. (this isn't used for diaper changes, of course but for emergencies or if the child can't calm down)

What if he stayed in with the older kids, but when he needed a diaper change he went in with the toddlers to get it changed?

And it's mentally challenged...not retarded.

No. I would talk to those in charge and see if you can come up with a more acceptable situation. I go to a very large church and the kids all get nametags w/ numbers on them when we arrive. If they need a parent during church the number is put on screen so the parent knows. Maybe you can come up with something similar, so that if the kid needs attention during church the parent can slip out of church and do it. We, also, have special volunteers that help children with disabilities in our kids' rooms. This way they get to be with all the other kids, but have someone there who can help them. I hope you can work something out!!!

I say yes because if he needs his diaper changed he should be with the other kids that need diaper changes. The people that work outside of the toddler room shouldn't be expected to change diapers if it not their job.

Not fair and sounds like a church I would not attend.

Of course not, and it is illegal under the ADA (Americans with Disabilties Act). This poor young man's parents must do something! This is not right!

no! I would demand he be treated like a 15 year old, not a baby.
