Dog meat is considered a delicacy in some asian cultures (including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Mayanmar)

"Thịt chó" means eating a (hot) dog - literally, in Vietnamese

Yes, many Asian countries eat dogs. However, you need to keep in mind that these dogs aren't like little pets that you find in Western countries. These dogs are raised on dog farms the way Westerners raise cows or pigs. Just because the animal is a pet in one country does not denote the same in another. In some areas of South America people eat guinea pigs which is a pretty common pet in the US. In certain areas of Europe you can get horse meat.

Where is vetanaman??

Yes they do eat dogs and cats in other countries, and probably a lot of other animals you'd never think of. But a lot of American foods are seen just as "disgusting"--like Scrapple, rattlesnake, pig brains--or "cruel"--reindeer, songbirds, squirrels. The feelings of disgust or revulsion we have are fostered by our respective cultures and taboos. Dogs in some countries run the streets and cause trouble, and are not considered "man's best friend." So if you disagree with some aspect of another person's culture, you should keep it to yourself before you get embarassed. Not meant to be a rant, and sorry if it came off that way, but I was just a little upset by some of the other answers.

go to www.weird-food.com, and it'll blow your mind.

[And no, I have never eaten dog before, and don't intend to. I am also a dog lover, but I still think it's important to respect other people.]

In countries such China, Vietnam and South Korea people do eat dogs and cats. In countries like Taiwan, Philippines and Japan the practice is banned. It is important to remember that this only happens in few and remote parts of these countries, but in China for example, 10 million dogs are killed each year for meat. There's a video on youtube about it:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vfHnGc1WeQs
VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED.

For more information, http://www.animalsasia.org has a program all about it.

It is important not to stereotype - this is not a common practice in these countries.

And I would like to point out to anyone who has said "Dogs aren't pets in these countries" is WRONG. Dogs and Cats are quite domesticated in parts of China, as the one child per family policy is so strict, many people look for affection from domestic cats and dogs and there are even breeding clubs and dog shows in China.

Although the Filipino "tigas ng ulo" ( hard headed ) attitude is very common so I understand your question I do NOT believe this attitude is dominant nor the primary reason for widespread poverty in the Philippines. After living here so many years I have come to believe the widespread happiness and contentment amongst Filipinos whether rich or poor leads to such poverty. Of course there are many other reasons like both local and international politics where it's probably in the interest of USA foreign policy and the Filipino wealthy, educated abroad elite that the Philippines remains a developing nation aka "third world" poor country.

Many people in many countries eat dog meat (usually dogs raised for the purpose on dog farms). It makes no more or less sense than eating cows, pigs, chickens, goats, emus, ostriches, kangaroos, or buffalo, though as a pet-dog-owner myself, the idea makes me a little queasy!

Pigs are actually a lot smarter than dogs, so how can bacon be okay if dog-meat isn't?

Yes. And the dogs are often strung up and beaten while still alive to tenderize the 'meat'. Cats are also eaten - boiled alive.

So, the question them becomes why we condemn this but have no problem with butchering cows alive, boiling chickens alive, and suffocating fish here in the US.

it's true.
In several parts in Indonesia dog is considered as food (in north sumatra, central java, menado). I have tried once and I didn't realize that it was dog meat until my friend mentioned that.
but this is not a popular dish, since it's only eaten by non-muslims. and many people consider that killing dogs for food is a shame, because it's more of a pet these days.

I had dog meat on several occasions whilst visiting Egypt. It's kind of like tough beef.

The wikipedia article has the full list (and it's not just the orient), and a really gross picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_meat
