Down is not necessarily bad. Feathers can be plucked just before the birds are going to lose them anyway, and also they can be collected from nests after the babies grow up and leave, because the nests are lined in down. Chances are the feathers in the coat come from a duck that was killed for food though. Wool is a good alternative because it does not harm a sheep when it is sheared. Some animal products are ok, it just depends on how they are manufactured. You just have to know the source to decide.

There is simply no reason to throw away good products. She should at least use the things she already has. Waste is much worse than eating meat in my opinion.

I still don't understand the problem with using animal skins. If the meat is feeding people, and meat-eaters are most certainly going to continue eating meat, why NOT use the leather for coats or shoes?

I buy leather products almost exclusive, because a PETA member once thought it was funny to paint my leather jacket. Jackets, belt, wallet, shoes, you name it. There's not going to be a significant percentage of the population boycotting leather. The consumer value is just too high.

Relax, enjoy your warm jacket and your boots.

Who CARES what other people say? If they don't like it, fine. No need to pass judgement, or allow people to pass judgement on you for your style choices.

If what she wears is a dealbreaker for acceptance or a friendship, then I wouldn't say the friendship is worth it, and go find new friends to hang out with instead of the friends with sticks up their butts about your purchases. Your friend should go with her convictions, not what a bunch of overpaid zealots from PETA think.

I still own and use two leather saddles, leather riding boots, and leather belts that I wear when I show horses; I've been a vegetarian for several years. My everyday shoes are synthetic, and my jackets are made of synthetic materials as well. It kind of seems wasteful to throw out perfectly good leather shoes et cetera when you can just use them until they wear out. Afterwards, your friend can vow not to buy more leather.

If she bought them before going veg, throwing them is a waste. It adds insult to injury to the dead animal. Think about it. Just tell her not to buy any more. Perhaps she can even donate the stuff to someone who needs it.

If she's vegetarian for political reasons, then one way to think of it is that she would be needlessly wasting an animals life that has already died. If she likes the shoes - then it is better to wear the shoes and enjoy them, choosing to buy vegetarian products from the present forward.

If she has guilt about owning and using these items then she should donate them to charity - if she has no guilt then she should keep them. People choose the veg lifestyle for many reasons ranging from dietary concerns, religion and animal protection, it is up to her to decide how far she wishes to take it. Good Luck!

I believe that it is mostly vegans that do not wear leather, and down objects. It doesn't make too much sense for her to not wear them. It is up to her personal feelings and morals on the shoes and coat.

well, vegans are the ones who don't have anything to do with animal products. i'm a vegetarian and i still wear leather shoes (ballet slippers), but it just depends on what she feels is right. i wouldn't waste them by throwing them away, i would donate them to a local goodwill or other donation place.

No. She should certainly avoid buying new leather or down products, but throwing away those that she already have would not bring the animals back (and might even be considered disrespectful, as she would be throwing away products that cost them their lives).
