basically...just shy of a full blown dinner
usually inmplies...meatballs..small sandwiches.(usually all the condiments are put out on the table along with a baked ham/turkeyand you fix your own sandwich)..veggie trays...cheese trays...dips...sauces..punch (or eggnog this time of year)...little smokies (finger sauages)...you won't find alot of chips and peanut bowls here....
it doesn't require much cooking...but it will fill you up
not finger foods...fork required
as for the gift....try baking a cake or pie or a fresh fruit tray....something everyone will enjoy and that your hostess will appreciate....have fun!

When an invitation states "heavy hors de'vours" it means that they will be serving something more than chips n dip, probably substantial enough that you should only have a very light dinner before going. Definitely bring a little gift, chocolates, wine, a candle or even something home-made are all appropriate.

Not sure, but it sounds like they want more substantial hors d'oeuvres (chicken wings as opposed to carrot sticks).
A host/hostess gift can be anything from a bottle of wine to a small plant to a nice candle.

That means they will be serving finger foods only.
You can bring a hostess gift of a nice bottle of wine or box of candy or tin of cookies. Be sure to put your name on a gift card so they will know it was from you.
Enjoy and have a nice holiday!

That means that there will not be a meal. There will be allot of finger food. Find out if there will be alcohol if so bring a bottle of wine, if not make some type of finger food and take that.

I'm not sure if they're telling you all they're serving are hor'doevres or if they're asking you to bring them. Might call and ask and plead ignorance.
Hostess gifts are always nice, you know what you can spend and hopefully you know enough about your hosts to know what they'd like. It doesn't have to be expensive .

There will only be little finger foods, but plenty of them. Take candles.
