Generally a low resting heart rate isn't a bad thing, it can just mean you are in relatively good cardiovascular fitness. As long as you feel fine all the time, this alone is not cause for concern.

Usually a slow heart rate in young people is very good, it usually occurs in athletes. Bradycardia is a condition that occurs typically in older is which the heart can't or does not pump at full speed anymore. Bradycardia can be caused by diabetes as well as medications. BUT if your heart rate fluctuates between high (140) and low (50) that can indicate a problem, ARRHYTHMIAS. If you are found to have arrhythmias (I'm 21, healthy, my pulse is usually 51 but every once in a while jumps to 160 ) a cheap medication (either a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker) can do the trick and regulate your heart rate. There is little chance you have anything to worry about if your physician suspects anything is wrong, they would send you to a cardiologist ASAP.

Athletes usually have this heart rate, it shows fitness. Well it can be problematic as well in some situation.... but for now, just take it, it is okay. Unless you start feeling any near fainting episode .... and such then see a doctor. You should also ask for an EKG,
Why is it low - THe heart is very strong and one pump is effective in delivering blood to the rest of the body compared to a non-athletic person. Hence you need lesser number of heart beat to deliver blood compared to your non-athletic counterpart.

You are in a good situation. Most athletes have a slow heart rate, due to their constant exercise. Your blood pressure should be low, as average is 120 over 80.

A heart rate of less than 60 is called Bradyarrhythmia or Bradycardia. The average resting heart rate is 60 to 100 beats per minute.
It is important to realize that for some people with healthy hearts, a rate below 60 beats per minute may be normal. After all, our heart rates may dip below normal range when we sleep, and some athletes experience heart rates below 60 beats per minute when they rest.
The two most common causes of bradycardia are diseases of the sinoatrial (SA) node (sick sinus syndrome), which is the heart's natural pacemaker or other problems with the heart's electrical conduction system (heart block). These diseases can cause the heart to beat too slowly all the time or occasionally. In either case, the heart may not pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. As the heart rate declines, there is not sufficient blood flow to the brain, causing feelings of light-headedness, and sometimes, fainting.

It really depends...on your age, and whether you exercise.
Usually if you excercise daily and are 30-40s, 50 BPM (beats per min) is the norm and it means you are in awesome condition. For example, Lance Armstrongs BPM is around 38 or something...
But if you have hypertension, your heartbeat will tend to be slower as well, so it really depends on the given situation.
If your Dr said your are in good condition, that is probably true. It means your body is efficient and you are in great shape!

when she said it was around 50 she was refering to your resting heart rate. 50 is a really good resting heart rate. why? most people have a resting heart rate between 70-85. and most people's max heart rate when working out or running is 180. if you begin low, you have more stamina than most people.....
