It is natural when your lungs are infected for them to produce phlegm that coats them. Coughing it up is natural and it is just your lungs way of fighting off the infection that you currently have. I recommend stopping smoking if you do, at least for awhile, and drinking plenty of fluids, especially vitamin C

You might have a respiratory infection. It is important to note the color and the amount of phlegm and also the evolution of the phlegm (from the start...). If its green or yellow, then you might have a bacterial infection. If colorless, then most probably it is viral. Note also if there is blood on the phlegm as this MAY indicate a malignant condition or more severe infection. Visit your doctor, since your cough is already chronic (>3 weeks) and also if you have a previous heart condition. A frothy red pleghm may indicate a severe heart problem that is already affecting your lungs. Note also if you experience any breathing difficulties and chest pain. Go consult a doctor... =)

You have a chest infection. Get to the doc today for antibiotics and a check that it's nothing too serious.
