Is there anything used to attrack smoke or steamn so it doesn't spread?

Well, I knew someone who used to smoke in his parent's basement and he would blow the smoke into a wet bath towel. He felt that trapped the smoke pretty well. Otherwise, like in a car, crack a window and the smoke heads right out - if you are smoking a cigarette or something. A room full of smoke needs a fan to get it out.

A fan would suck in smoke or steam so they wouldn't spread. That is why the have fans above stoves and above showers.

For smoke, if light a candle it seems to help. Don't know if it will work for steam
